A Widowed Rancher Stopped for a Mother and Daughter in the Rain… She Said ‘Stay Back or I’ll Shoot
Chapter 12
The trial continued for weeks.
Mercer’s fortune began to collapse.
Landowners came forward.
Old records were reopened.
Families returned to farms they had been forced to abandon.
Sarah received her sister’s small inheritance.
But she did not leave.
Neither did Lucy.
Thomas returned to the ranch.
The house felt different.
There were three people at the dinner table.
Then four when Thomas’s father finally returned.
The old man had nowhere else to go.
Thomas struggled with that.
Forgiveness was not easy.
One evening, Thomas found his father repairing a fence.
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
His father looked at him.
“Because I owe you years.”
Thomas leaned against the post.
“You can’t give them back.”
“No.”
His father sighed.
“But I can stop wasting the years I have left.”
Thomas nodded.
It was not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was a beginning.
Inside the house, Sarah taught Lucy to read.
Thomas watched through the doorway.
Sarah looked up.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’ve been staring for a minute.”
“I was thinking.”
“That’s dangerous.”
Thomas smiled.
Sarah returned to the book.
“Thomas.”
“Yes?”
“You don’t have to look at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like you’re afraid I’ll disappear.”
Thomas became quiet.
“I am.”
Sarah closed the book.
She stood.
“I won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“But I know I don’t want to.”
Thomas looked at her.
Neither spoke.
Then Lucy shouted from the table.
“Are you going to kiss her or just stare?”
Thomas nearly choked.
Sarah covered her face.
His father laughed from outside.
For the first time in six years, Thomas’s house filled with laughter.
And he realized he no longer wanted the silence.
