A Rancher Posed as a Drifter—A Widow Shared Her Last Bread Without Knowing His Secret

Chapter 7

The secret room was smaller than Daniel expected.

There were shelves along three walls.

Ledgers.

Letters.

Maps.

And a wooden chest.

Eleanor held the lantern while Daniel searched.

“Look,” she whispered.

A map covered the table.

It showed the entire valley.

Red marks covered farms.

Including hers.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“This isn’t about Blackthorn.”

“What do you mean?”

“They’re trying to control the entire valley.”

He pointed to the map.

“Every farm marked in red has access to the river.”

Eleanor understood.

“The water.”

“Yes.”

Whoever controlled the river controlled the crops.

The cattle.

The mills.

The entire valley.

Daniel opened the chest.

Inside were letters.

He read the first.

Then another.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He handed one to Eleanor.

It was from Nathaniel.

Once the widow is removed, the river tract will be ours.

Eleanor looked at him.

“Your brother.”

Daniel nodded.

But another letter lay beneath it.

This one was written by a different hand.

Do not fear. Daniel will soon be dead.

Eleanor’s face went pale.

“When was this written?”

Daniel checked the date.

Three months earlier.

Before he had ever met her.

He read the final line.

The fire must look like an accident.

Daniel stared at it.

“My father’s house.”

“What?”

“The fire that killed my father.”

He had always been told the old man’s death was an accident.

A candle.

A dry curtain.

A locked room.

But the letter suggested otherwise.

Daniel suddenly heard footsteps above them.

He extinguished the lantern.

Eleanor held her breath.

The footsteps stopped.

Then came the sound of a door closing.

Daniel whispered:

“We’re trapped.”

“Another way out?”

“Maybe.”

They searched the walls.

Nothing.

Then Eleanor touched the floor.

“This stone moves.”

Together they pushed.

A narrow passage opened beneath the shelves.

They crawled through.

It led outside the estate.

They emerged behind the stable.

But someone was waiting.

Nathaniel.

He held a pistol.

“You were always too curious, brother.”

Daniel stepped in front of Eleanor.

“Did you kill Father?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“He was dying anyway.”

Daniel’s fists clenched.

“You burned the house.”

“He refused to change his will.”

“You forged the deeds.”

“Yes.”

“You’re taking the farms.”

“I’m saving Blackthorn.”

“You’re stealing it.”

Nathaniel raised the pistol.

“No. I’m finishing what Father was too weak to do.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You tried to kill me.”

Nathaniel’s smile disappeared.

“You were supposed to die on the western road.”

Eleanor whispered:

“You knew he was alive.”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“You.”

He raised the pistol toward her.

Daniel moved instantly.

The shot cracked through the night.

Daniel staggered.

Eleanor screamed.

But he didn’t fall.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

He grabbed Nathaniel’s wrist.

The pistol dropped.

They struggled.

Nathaniel slipped away and ran toward the house.

Daniel started after him.

Eleanor caught his arm.

“No.”

“He’ll escape.”

“You’re bleeding.”

Daniel looked down.

Blood covered his coat.

He sank against the stable wall.

Eleanor tore fabric from her dress and pressed it against the wound.

“Hold this.”

Daniel obeyed.

She knelt beside him.

“You could have died.”

“So could you.”

“I wasn’t the one standing in front of a pistol.”

“I couldn’t let him shoot you.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

Daniel met her eyes.

“Because I love you.”

Everything went silent.

Even the horses seemed still.

Eleanor stared at him.

“You barely know me.”

“I know enough.”

She pressed the cloth harder against his shoulder.

“You’re an impossible man.”

Daniel smiled through the pain.

“So I’ve been told.”

She leaned closer.

Then kissed him.

It was brief.

Uncertain.

But real.

When she pulled away, Daniel whispered:

“We still have to stop him.”

“I know.”

And for the first time, they faced the danger together.
