Little Girl’s Cry Echoed Through the Hall—Until Her CEO Father Saw What the Stepmom Hid
Chapter 1
Why was his little girl crying behind a locked door at midnight?
Daniel Carter stopped halfway up the marble staircase, one hand still gripping the railing, while the sound tore through the quiet mansion again.
“Daddy!”
The cry was thin, frightened, and desperate.
Daniel dropped his briefcase.
It struck the floor with a heavy thud, but the child behind the upstairs door screamed again as though she had not heard it.
“Daddy, please!”
Daniel ran.
His shoes hammered against the polished floor. The hallway lights had been dimmed for the night, leaving long shadows between the portraits and the tall windows.
He reached his daughter’s bedroom and grabbed the handle.
Locked.
“Lily?” His voice changed instantly. “It’s Daddy. Open the door.”
Nothing.
Then came a muffled sob.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Lily, sweetheart, move away from the door.”
He stepped back and slammed his shoulder against it.
Once.
Twice.
The old wooden frame cracked.
On the third impact, the lock tore free.
The door swung inward.
Lily stood in the corner wearing pink pajamas, her bare feet pressed against the cold floor.
She was trembling.
But Daniel barely noticed her tears at first.
His eyes had gone to the narrow space beneath the bed.
A small hand was reaching from underneath.
Not Lily’s.
Daniel froze.
Behind him, footsteps hurried down the hall.
“Daniel!”
His wife, Victoria, appeared in a silk robe, her expression perfectly arranged into concern.
“What happened?” she whispered.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He crouched beside the bed.
“Lily,” he said softly, “what is under there?”
His daughter stared at Victoria.
That look told him more than words could.
Fear.
Not fear of the dark.
Not fear of being alone.
Fear of someone standing in the doorway.
Victoria took one step forward.
“Daniel, she’s been having nightmares again. I told you—”
Lily suddenly screamed.
“DON’T LET HER TAKE IT!”
Daniel looked beneath the bed.
There, hidden behind a storage box, was a small wooden case.
And scratched across its lid were three words:
FOR DADDY ONLY.
