Single Dad Missed His Interview to Help a Stranger—She Was the CEO Hiring Him
Chapter 1
The alarm on Daniel Brooks’s phone rang at 6:10 a.m., but he was already awake.
He had spent most of the night staring at the ceiling.
Today was supposed to be the day everything changed.
At 9:00 a.m., Daniel had an interview at Whitmore Technologies, one of the largest software companies in Atlanta. The position was operations manager, a job that paid nearly three times what he earned repairing appliances and doing temporary warehouse work.
For a single father raising an eight-year-old daughter, the opportunity felt almost impossible.
Daniel had worn the same suit to four previous interviews.
He had ironed it carefully the night before.
His daughter, Lily, walked into the kitchen wearing pajamas covered with little stars.
“Dad?”
Daniel turned.
“Morning, sweetheart.”
“Are you nervous?”
He smiled.
“A little.”
“You’re going to get it.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“You sound very confident.”
“I am.”
She climbed onto a chair.
“You always help people. Good things happen to people who help people.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Who told you that?”
“Grandma.”
The smile disappeared briefly.
Lily’s grandmother had passed away two years earlier.
Daniel had been raising Lily alone ever since.
He packed her lunch and checked the clock.
7:05.
They needed to leave.
Daniel grabbed his folder.
Resume.
References.
Certifications.
Everything was ready.
At 7:30, they were driving through downtown Atlanta.
Traffic was already heavy.
Daniel glanced at the clock.
7:48.
Then he saw the accident.
A gray sedan had stopped awkwardly near an intersection.
A woman stood beside it, staring at the open hood.
Cars passed around her.
Nobody stopped.
Daniel slowed down.
“Dad, we’re going to be late.”
“I know.”
He pulled over.
Lily sighed.
“Are we helping again?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Looks like it.”
The woman was clearly frustrated.
She wore a dark business suit and carried a leather briefcase.
Daniel approached.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
She glanced at him.
“I just can’t get the car started.”
Daniel opened the hood.
He examined the engine.
“You have a loose battery connection.”
“Can you fix it?”
“Probably.”
Daniel checked his watch.
8:02.
He had less than an hour.
He tightened the terminal.
Nothing.
He checked again.
Then he noticed corrosion.
“Do you have anything to clean this?”
The woman shook her head.
Daniel returned to his truck.
He had an emergency tool kit.
Lily watched from the passenger seat.
“Dad…”
“I know.”
“You’ll miss your interview.”
Daniel looked at the woman.
She was standing alone beside the disabled car.
He looked at the clock.
8:11.
He could leave.
He could tell himself someone else would stop.
Instead, he grabbed the tools.
Twenty minutes later, the car started.
The woman looked relieved.
“Thank you.”
Daniel smiled.
“No problem.”
He closed the hood.
Then he checked his phone.
Three missed calls.
His interview had started nine minutes ago.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
He had missed it.
The woman noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
“I had a job interview.”
She stared.
“When?”
“Nine.”
“What time is it?”
“9:09.”
She looked stunned.
“You stopped for me?”
Daniel shrugged.
“You needed help.”
The woman studied him carefully.
“What company?”
“Whitmore Technologies.”
Her expression changed.
Daniel didn’t notice.
He simply said goodbye, took Lily’s hand, and walked back toward his truck.
Behind him, the woman reached for her phone.
“Cancel my next meeting,” she said.
Her assistant asked why.
The woman looked at Daniel disappearing into the morning traffic.
“Because I just met the man I was supposed to interview.”
And Daniel had no idea that the stranger whose car he had repaired was the CEO of Whitmore Technologies.
