HE LEFT HER AT THE ALTAR FOR HER SISTER—UNAWARE SHE WAS THE DON’S ONLY BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER

Chapter 1

The church bells began ringing at noon, exactly as they had been scheduled.

Inside Saint Raphael’s Cathedral, hundreds of guests rose as the organ filled the enormous room with music. Sunlight poured through stained-glass windows, scattering red and gold across the polished marble floor.

At the end of the aisle stood Daniel Hayes.

He wore an immaculate black tuxedo.

His hands were clasped tightly in front of him.

Everyone watching him believed he was nervous because he was about to marry the woman he loved.

They were wrong.

Daniel wasn’t nervous.

He was waiting.

The cathedral doors opened.

Everyone turned.

But instead of the bride they expected, a young woman stepped inside alone.

Her name was Elena Rossi.

She was twenty-eight years old, elegant without trying to be, with dark hair gathered loosely behind her head and a simple diamond necklace around her throat.

She stopped at the entrance.

Her eyes found Daniel.

For one brief moment, she smiled.

Daniel didn’t smile back.

Elena immediately sensed something was wrong.

She began walking down the aisle.

Halfway toward the altar, she noticed her younger sister, Sofia, sitting in the front row.

Sofia wasn’t smiling either.

She looked frightened.

Elena’s steps slowed.

“Daniel?”

Her voice barely carried.

Daniel looked at her.

Then he turned toward the priest.

“I’m sorry.”

A murmur swept through the cathedral.

Elena stopped.

“What?”

Daniel finally faced her.

“I can’t do this.”

The priest lowered his head.

Someone gasped.

Elena stared at the man she had loved for four years.

“Do what?”

“Marry you.”

The room became silent.

Elena’s face lost its color.

“Why?”

Daniel swallowed.

Then he said the words that would destroy everything.

“Because I’m in love with Sofia.”

A collective gasp erupted.

Elena slowly turned toward her sister.

Sofia stood.

Tears were running down her cheeks.

“Elena, I’m sorry.”

Elena looked from one to the other.

“You’re sorry?”

Sofia approached her.

“I never wanted this to happen.”

“You’re wearing white.”

Sofia looked down.

Only then did Elena notice.

Her sister was wearing the second wedding dress.

The one Elena had ordered as a backup months earlier.

Elena suddenly understood.

This wasn’t spontaneous.

This had been planned.

Daniel had already decided.

Her sister had agreed.

The wedding guests watched in horrified silence.

Elena’s father wasn’t there.

That had always been strange.

Her mother had told everyone he had died before Elena was born.

Elena had never known his name.

She had grown up believing she was an orphan raised by her mother’s family.

But there was one person in the room who wasn’t shocked.

An elderly man sitting alone near the rear entrance.

His name was Victor Moretti.

Most people knew him only as a wealthy businessman.

A few knew the truth.

Victor was one of the most powerful crime bosses on the East Coast.

And he had spent thirty years searching for one person.

His biological daughter.

When Victor saw Elena standing alone at the altar, something inside him broke.

He had seen her face before.

Not in person.

In an old photograph.

A photograph of the daughter he had been told died as an infant.

Victor stood slowly.

His bodyguard whispered:

“Sir?”

Victor pointed toward Elena.

“Find out who she is.”

The bodyguard stared.

“Now.”

Victor watched Elena walk out of the cathedral alone.

Then he noticed the necklace around her throat.

A tiny silver pendant.

The same pendant he had given Elena’s mother thirty years earlier.

Victor’s hands began to tremble.

He whispered:

“My daughter.”

Outside, Elena stepped into the rain.

She removed her engagement ring.

She stared at it for several seconds.

Then she threw it into the gutter.

Behind her, Sofia and Daniel remained inside the cathedral.

They thought they had won.

They had no idea what was coming.

Because the woman they had humiliated in front of hundreds of people was not an abandoned bride.

She was the only biological heir of Victor Moretti.

And the most dangerous secret in the city was about to come home.
