I Decided to Surprise My Wife at the Airport Pickup — Then She Walked Out Holding Another Man’s Hand
Chapter 1
Ethan Carter had spent three days planning the surprise.
His wife, Olivia, had been away in Chicago for nearly two weeks attending a business conference. She had told him her flight would land at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport shortly after six in the evening.
Normally, Ethan would have simply waited at home.
But something about this trip had felt different.
Olivia had become distant over the previous year.
She answered texts hours later.
She stopped telling him about her day.
And whenever Ethan asked if something was wrong, she gave him the same answer.
“I’m just tired.”
So Ethan decided to surprise her.
He left work early, bought a bouquet of white roses from a florist near the airport, and even stopped at her favorite restaurant to pick up the dessert she loved.
He wanted her to see him waiting.
He wanted to remind her that someone was still waiting for her at home.
At 6:17 p.m., Ethan stood near the arrivals area.
He checked his phone.
Flight landed.
He smiled.
A few minutes later, passengers began appearing through the sliding doors.
Families reunited.
Children ran toward parents.
People hugged.
Ethan searched every face.
Then he saw her.
Olivia.
She looked beautiful.
But Ethan’s smile disappeared almost instantly.
She wasn’t alone.
A tall man walked beside her.
Dark hair.
Gray jacket.
One hand holding a carry-on.
The other holding Olivia’s hand.
Not casually.
Not accidentally.
Their fingers were intertwined.
Ethan couldn’t move.
The flowers suddenly felt ridiculous.
Olivia laughed at something the man said.
Then she looked up.
And saw Ethan.
Her smile vanished.
The man beside her stopped.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Ethan looked at their hands.
Then at his wife.
“Olivia?”
She slowly released the man’s hand.
“Ethan…”
He held up the flowers.
“I came to surprise you.”
Her eyes filled with fear.
The stranger stepped forward.
Ethan looked at him.
“Who are you?”
The man stared back.
“My name is Nathan.”
Ethan swallowed.
“Why were you holding my wife’s hand?”
Nathan didn’t answer.
Olivia stepped between them.
“Ethan, please.”
“Please what?”
She looked around at the crowded airport.
Then whispered:
“We need to talk.”
Ethan looked at the man again.
Nathan’s expression wasn’t guilty.
It was almost sympathetic.
And somehow, that frightened Ethan more.
Because it meant Nathan knew something Ethan didn’t.
