Chapter 2
Sarah spent the next three days gathering evidence.
She didn’t tell anyone.
Not even her closest colleague.
The numbers were getting worse.
Millions of dollars had been transferred through consulting companies that barely existed.
Several contracts had been approved without proper review.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Richard Kane.
On Friday afternoon, Sarah found Daniel in the basement storage area.
She closed the door behind her.
“I copied everything.”
Daniel looked at the flash drive in her hand.
“Good.”
“What are you going to do?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he asked:
“Do you trust me?”
Sarah looked confused.
“I don’t know you.”
“Exactly.”
She stared at him.
Then Daniel smiled.
“That’s probably why you should.”
He took the drive.
“I’ll make sure this gets to the right people.”
Sarah nodded.
Then she said:
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“Richard is planning layoffs.”
“How many?”
“Two hundred.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Why?”
“He says it’s restructuring.”
“Is it?”
Sarah shook her head.
“He’s cutting departments that questioned him.”
Daniel understood.
It wasn’t restructuring.
It was retaliation.
That evening, Daniel stayed late.
The building was almost empty.
He entered the executive floor using his access card.
The security guard nodded.
Nobody questioned him.
Daniel entered the CEO’s office.
He didn’t touch anything.
He simply looked around.
On Richard’s desk was a framed photograph from a company awards ceremony.
Richard stood in the center.
Daniel’s father stood beside him.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
His father had trusted Richard.
Perhaps too much.
Daniel left.
The next morning, Richard held an all-hands meeting.
He stood onstage in front of hundreds of employees.
“Harrington Technologies needs discipline.”
His voice echoed through the auditorium.
“Some people have become comfortable.”
He looked toward the back.
At Daniel.
“You cannot expect a company to succeed if everyone thinks they deserve special treatment.”
Several employees looked uncomfortable.
Richard continued.
“We need accountability.”
Then he noticed Daniel holding his cleaning cart.
Richard smiled.
“Even our cleaning staff needs to understand that.”
People laughed nervously.
Daniel simply nodded.
Richard finished his speech.
Afterward, one of the managers approached Daniel.
“Don’t take it personally.”
Daniel smiled.
“I don’t.”
But another employee wasn’t laughing.
Sarah.
She had watched the entire thing.
She walked toward Daniel.
“That was cruel.”
Daniel shrugged.
“Cruelty tells you more about the person using it than the person receiving it.”
Sarah looked at him.
“You talk like you’ve been through this before.”
“I have.”
She hesitated.
“Who are you?”
Daniel smiled.
“Someone who cleans windows.”
She laughed.
“Seriously.”
“Seriously.”
He pushed his cart away.
But that evening, something happened that changed everything.
The board’s lead independent director, Margaret Ellis, received an anonymous package.
Inside were copies of the same financial documents Sarah had found.
There was also one handwritten note.
Look closer.
Margaret did.
She spent the entire weekend reviewing the documents.
By Monday morning, she had called an emergency board meeting.
Richard had no idea why.
He walked into his office expecting another ordinary Monday.
Instead, his assistant said:
“Mr. Kane, the board has requested your presence at 10:00.”
“Why?”
“She wouldn’t say.”
Richard frowned.
Then he saw Daniel cleaning the hallway.
“Hey.”
Daniel looked up.
Richard smiled.
“Hope you enjoy that job.”
Daniel nodded.
“I do.”
Richard laughed.
“Good.”
He walked away.
Daniel watched him disappear.
Then he looked at his watch.
10:00.
The boardroom.
He smiled.
“Time.”
