They Forced Me to Take the Fall…Then a Billionaire Heir Chose Me!

Chapter 8

Three weeks later, Ava returned to work.

Not at Hawthorne.

She had no desire to go back.

Instead, she accepted a position with an independent financial investigations firm.

Her first assignment was reviewing corporate fraud cases.

Her manager asked why she had chosen the job.

Ava smiled.

“Because I know what it feels like to be blamed for something you didn’t do.”

Her life slowly returned to normal.

The legal charges disappeared.

The news stories changed.

The public moved on.

But Ava couldn’t forget Julian.

They spoke every day.

Sometimes for hours.

Sometimes only for a few minutes.

He never pressured her.

He never tried to buy her affection.

He simply stayed.

One evening, he invited her to dinner.

She arrived at a quiet restaurant.

Julian was already waiting.

He stood when she entered.

“You look beautiful.”

Ava smiled.

“You look nervous.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

Julian reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Ava opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

It was the two of them standing outside the courthouse after Richard’s arrest.

Neither had noticed the photographer.

They were looking at each other.

Julian said:

“I kept this.”

Ava looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because that’s when I realized something.”

“What?”

“I had spent my entire life being told that the Blackwood name was the most important thing I had.”

He paused.

“Then I met you.”

Ava’s eyes softened.

“And?”

“I realized they were wrong.”

He reached across the table.

“I don’t want to choose the company.”

“I don’t want to choose the family fortune.”

“I don’t want to choose the expectations.”

“I choose you.”

Ava smiled.

“You know I’m not impressed by your money.”

“I know.”

“And I’m not interested in becoming part of some billionaire family drama.”

“I know.”

“And if you ever try to buy me a diamond to solve an argument—”

Julian laughed.

“I’ll remember.”

Ava took his hand.

For the first time since the nightmare began, she felt safe.

Not because Julian was wealthy.

Not because he was powerful.

But because when everyone else had decided she was expendable, he had looked at her and believed her.

He had chosen her when doing so cost him everything.

And Ava realized that sometimes the greatest love story doesn’t begin with two people falling in love.

Sometimes it begins with one person saying:

“I believe you.”
