They Doubted Her at the Bank — Then a $15M Trust Meeting Proved Them Wrong
Chapter 9
The attack came at night.
Eleanor woke to the sound of breaking glass.
Her father was already out of bed.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
He turned.
“Eleanor.”
“I’ve spent my entire life being protected by secrets.”
She took the pistol from the table.
“Not anymore.”
They moved downstairs.
Two men were inside.
Nathaniel confronted one.
Eleanor fired into the ceiling.
The intruders fled.
Outside, horses thundered away.
A note had been left behind.
The trust was never yours.
Eleanor picked it up.
Her father read it.
“Wren.”
“Where would he go?”
Nathaniel thought.
“Somewhere he believes I won’t follow.”
“Where?”
“The old warehouse.”
The same warehouse where the original conspirators had stored their records.
They went there before dawn.
Inside, they found Thomas Wren.
He looked exhausted.
But he was smiling.
“You came.”
Eleanor raised her pistol.
“You tried to kill me.”
“No.”
“You threatened my family.”
“I wanted the trust.”
“Why?”
Wren laughed.
“Because your father ruined everything.”
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“You ruined yourself.”
Wren’s expression hardened.
“You think you were noble?”
“No.”
“You took millions from men who trusted you.”
“I took nothing.”
“You created the trust.”
“I created it to protect my daughter.”
“You created it because you knew what was coming.”
Nathaniel’s silence confirmed it.
Wren understood.
“You knew Charles would betray you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was involved.”
“Yes.”
“And you still trusted me?”
Nathaniel looked at him.
“I hoped you would choose differently.”
Wren laughed bitterly.
“Hope makes fools of good men.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
She lowered the pistol.
“Greed does.”
Officers entered behind her.
Wren stared.
“You planned this.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor had known he would come for the records.
She had allowed him to lead them to the warehouse.
The final evidence was found in a hidden chest.
Letters.
Payments.
Names.
Enough to convict every remaining conspirator.
Wren was arrested.
This time, the conspiracy was finished.
