The next attack came at night.

The warehouse burned.

Clara woke to bells.

She ran outside.

Flames rose into the sky.

Samuel was already there.

“Get everyone away!”

They formed a line to the river.

Buckets passed from hand to hand.

After an hour, the fire was controlled.

The warehouse was damaged.

But the records survived.

Clara entered the ruins.

Ash covered everything.

She found a metal box beneath the floor.

Inside was the original charter.

Her husband had hidden it there.

She held it against her chest.

Samuel watched.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“No?”

“You’re shaking.”

“I am angry.”

“You should be.”

Clara looked toward the burning warehouse.

“I spent six months thinking I was powerless.”

“You weren’t.”

“I know that now.”

Samuel hesitated.

“Clara.”

She looked at him.

“You don’t have to do this alone.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She smiled faintly.

“I am learning.”

That night, they sat on the porch.

Samuel told her about his own father.

He had lost his ranch once.

A merchant had taken advantage of him.

“I understand what it means to watch something disappear because powerful men decide they want it.”

Clara looked at him.

“Did you rebuild?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Slowly.”

She smiled.

“That’s what I will do.”

Samuel looked at her.

“You’ve already started.”

Silence settled.

Then Clara asked:

“Why do you keep helping me?”

Samuel answered honestly.

“Because your husband once helped me.”

“Only that?”

He looked away.

“No.”

She waited.

“I admire you.”

Clara smiled.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It may be.”

Before he could say more, a rider approached.

A message from the provincial office.

The governor’s representative would arrive in three days.

Clara finally had a chance to expose Crane.

But Crane knew it too.

Three days later, the representative’s carriage never arrived.

The horses were found abandoned on the road.

The men who had escorted him were missing.

Crane had moved first.
