Elias took Clara outside town.
They stopped at an abandoned barn.
Inside were maps, photographs and documents.
Clara saw her father’s name everywhere.
THOMAS BENNETT.
She turned toward Elias.
“What is this?”
“The reason he disappeared.”
Elias pointed to a map.
Red marks covered several ranches.
“Land theft.”
Another document.
“Bribed judges.”
Another.
“Murders.”
Clara’s hands trembled.
“Who did this?”
Elias pointed to one name.
SILAS CROWE.
“He’s been doing it for twelve years.”
“Why hasn’t anyone stopped him?”
“Because half the people who tried are dead.”
Clara stared at the documents.
“Why did my father trust you?”
“He didn’t.”
She looked confused.
“He trusted my brother.”
Elias paused.
“My brother died because he found the ledger.”
“What ledger?”
Elias looked toward the floor.
“The one Crowe is still looking for.”
A sound came from outside.
Elias grabbed his revolver.
Three riders appeared.
Crowe was among them.
He smiled.
“Boone.”
Elias stepped outside.
Crowe looked at Clara.
“So you’re Bennett’s little girl.”
Clara froze.
Crowe smiled.
“Your father was very clever.”
“What did he do?”
Crowe laughed.
“He stole something from me.”
“What?”
Crowe looked at Elias.
“Tell her.”
Elias said nothing.
Crowe continued.
“The truth about her father.”
Then he rode away.
Clara turned to Elias.
“What did my father steal?”
Elias looked at her.
“A list.”
“Of what?”
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
Elias answered:
“Every person in Red Hollow who works for Crowe.”
