The Shy Waitress Greeted the Millionaire’s Deaf Mother — Then Her Sign Language Shocked Everyone

Chapter 11

Eleanor’s recovery was slow.

Alexander spent every day at the hospital.

Mia came after work.

Caleb visited too.

The family took turns.

The experience changed Alexander.

He became more open.

More present.

Less obsessed with control.

One evening, he sat beside Mia.

“I thought I had to protect everyone.”

She smiled.

“You still do.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I think I was protecting myself.”

Mia looked at him.

“From what?”

“Loss.”

She understood.

Her own life had been shaped by loss.

She reached for his hand.

“I can’t promise you won’t lose people.”

“I know.”

“But I can promise you won’t be alone.”

He looked at her.

“That’s enough.”

He kissed her.

Eleanor watched from the hospital bed.

She smiled.

Later, she signed:

FINALLY.

Alexander laughed.

“Mom.”

Mia laughed too.

Eleanor had always been more perceptive than either of them.

When she improved, she asked Mia to join her at home.

They sat together.

Eleanor signed:

DO YOU REALLY LOVE HIM?

Mia nodded.

YES.

WHY?

Mia thought.

Then signed:

HE LISTENS.

Eleanor smiled.

That was enough.

Alexander eventually proposed.

He didn’t propose at a gala.

He returned to the Bellmont Hotel.

The same restaurant.

The same table where Mia had first signed to Eleanor.

He waited until the dining room was empty.

Then he sat at table twelve.

Mia arrived.

She looked around.

“Why are we here?”

Alexander smiled.

“Because this is where my life changed.”

He stood.

Then signed awkwardly:

WILL YOU MARRY ME?

Mia laughed and cried at the same time.

Her hands trembled.

She signed:

YOUR SIGN IS STILL TERRIBLE.

He smiled.

IS THAT A YES?

She nodded.

YES.

They kissed.

Eleanor watched from across the room.

She clapped quietly.
