THE SEVENTH CHILD WAS NEVER REPORTED MISSING

Chapter 6

Ethan stopped the video.

“Where is the server?”

Sarah pointed.

“Behind that wall.”

They searched the room.

A hidden compartment contained a hard drive.

Ethan removed it.

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Sarah whispered,

“Ethan.”

“I know.”

Footsteps approached.

Slowly.

One step.

Then another.

Ethan raised his weapon.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

Sarah recognized it.

Daniel Reed.

The lights returned.

Reed stood at the end of the corridor.

He looked calm.

Almost disappointed.

“You’ve been investigating the children.”

Ethan kept his weapon raised.

“You’re under investigation.”

Reed smiled.

“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“Seven children disappeared.”

“They were selected.”

“By who?”

“By their parents.”

Sarah’s face hardened.

“That’s a lie.”

Reed shook his head.

“Parents were told their children needed specialized treatment.”

“And then?”

“We discovered something.”

“What?”

Reed looked at the beds.

“Some children can remember things other people cannot.”

Ethan frowned.

“Like what?”

“Things that haven’t happened yet.”

Silence.

Sarah stared at him.

“You expect us to believe these children could predict the future?”

“No.”

Reed smiled.

“I expect you to understand that someone else believed it.”

He turned.

“You should leave before they realize you’re here.”

Ethan shouted:

“Who?”

Reed stopped.

Then answered:

“The people who funded the program.”

He disappeared through a door.

Ethan and Sarah chased him.

But when they reached the exit, Reed was gone.

Outside, a vehicle sped away.

Sarah looked at the license plate.

She froze.

“That truck.”

Ethan looked.

Black pickup.

The same one seen before every disappearance.
