The Secret Beneath the Clock Tower

Chapter 12

Daniel refused to believe it.

“My father never gave me a deed.”

Elena insisted.

“He did.”

“Where?”

“He told me he had hidden it somewhere you would never look.”

Daniel thought for several seconds.

Then he looked toward the umbrella stand.

Vivian followed him.

They removed the wooden tabletop.

Nothing.

They lifted the crates.

Nothing.

Daniel examined the metal frame.

Then he stopped.

“There.”

A tiny screw looked newer than the others.

He removed it.

Inside the hollow metal tube was a rolled document.

The original deed.

Twenty-eight years old.

Still intact.

Vivian held it carefully.

The land beneath the hotel had never been legally transferred.

But there was something else.

A handwritten amendment was attached.

It stated that if the property was ever threatened by fraudulent ownership claims, the land would be transferred to a public community trust.

Vivian read it twice.

“So my family can’t own it.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“They can’t sell it.”

“No.”

“They can’t use it as collateral.”

“No.”

Vivian looked at the hotel.

Her entire renovation plan depended on that land being used as security.

The bank could call the loan.

The hotel could collapse.

For the first time, Vivian understood why her father had been afraid.

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

“There is a condition.”

“What condition?”

“The hotel can remain.”

Vivian looked at him.

“If the business agrees to operate under the trust.”

“What does that mean?”

“The hotel has to serve the community.”

Vivian laughed bitterly.

“My father built a luxury hotel.”

“Then perhaps it’s time to decide what it should become.”

Before she could answer, police cars arrived.

Clara had been found.

She had surrendered.

Not because she had changed her mind.

Because she had discovered that the deed was no longer missing.

Clara admitted everything.

She had sabotaged the hotel.

She had manipulated the renovation.

She had planned to acquire the property through foreclosure.

But she denied harming Elena.

She also revealed something else.

Arthur had kept a second ledger.

A ledger containing every bribe, every false contract, every hidden payment.

It was stored in a safety deposit box.

The box was in Richard’s name.

Vivian turned to her father.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Why was your name on it?”

“Arthur used my identity.”

“Where is the key?”

Richard looked at her.

“I destroyed it.”

Clara laughed.

“You didn’t.”

Everyone turned.

Clara smiled.

“Because I have it.”

The police took the key.

The box was opened the next morning.

Inside was the second ledger.

And a letter from Arthur.

It contained a confession.

He admitted orchestrating the fraudulent property scheme.

He admitted threatening Elena.

He admitted manipulating the family.

But there was one final line.

If you are reading this, Clara failed.

Vivian turned the page.

Another sentence was written beneath it.

The person who saves the hotel must give it away.

Vivian stared at the words.

Her father began to cry.
