The Rancher’s Dog Laid Flowers in Her Lap… He Said, “I Think God Is Trying to Tell Me Something”
Chapter 12
The preacher confirmed everything.
He had kept Samuel’s letter for fourteen years.
He had been afraid to deliver it because Mercer had threatened him.
But now the truth was already moving.
The preacher had heard that the traveling judge was delayed.
He had come to Reed Ranch instead.
With him came three farmers whose land had also been stolen.
Each carried papers.
Each had a story.
Mercer had believed poor farmers would remain silent.
He had been wrong.
Thomas gathered everyone in the barn.
The original deed was placed on a table.
The preacher placed Samuel’s testimony beside it.
Then the farmers added theirs.
Margaret read each document carefully.
She found the same pattern.
Forged signatures.
False witnesses.
Altered dates.
Land transferred without consent.
Mercer had built his fortune on stolen soil.
But one final problem remained.
The registrar.
He was the man who could confirm the records.
And he was afraid.
Thomas and Margaret rode to town.
They found him packing his belongings.
“You’re leaving.”
The registrar looked at Margaret.
“I have a wife.”
“So do the men Mercer cheated.”
He lowered his eyes.
“You don’t understand.”
Margaret placed the original deed before him.
“Then look.”
He did.
His hands trembled.
“I knew.”
Thomas stared.
“How long?”
“Years.”
“Why?”
The registrar swallowed.
“Because my daughter was sick. Mercer paid for medicine.”
Margaret’s expression softened.
“Then testify.”
“I’ll lose everything.”
“You already know what it costs to stay silent.”
The registrar looked at her.
Then he nodded.
“I’ll testify.”
They returned to the ranch before sunset.
But Mercer was waiting.
He had brought twenty men.
The judge was still days away.
Mercer wanted the documents destroyed.
He gave Thomas one choice.
Hand over the evidence.
Or watch the ranch burn.
Thomas looked at Margaret.
Then at Gideon.
And smiled.
“No.”
