The Mountain Cowboy Appeared Once Every Winter—Until One Woman Followed Him Home
Chapter 14
Years passed.
The mountain cabin became a home.
The small herd grew.
Anna expanded the store.
Thomas married.
Children came.
Some belonged to Bellmere.
Some belonged to Anna and Elias.
The old land records were eventually placed in the chapel archive.
Mercer’s name became a warning rather than a threat.
And every winter, when the first snow fell, people still remembered the stranger who once appeared from the mountain.
But Elias no longer disappeared.
He still rode the northern trail.
Only now Anna rode beside him.
One winter morning, their young daughter asked:
“Father, why did you used to come here only once every winter?”
Elias looked at Anna.
She smiled.
“Tell her.”
He considered the question.
“I was afraid.”
The girl frowned.
“Of what?”
“Of belonging somewhere.”
Anna laughed.
“That’s not the whole truth.”
Elias smiled.
“No.”
“What was the rest?”
He looked at Anna.
“I was waiting for your mother to follow me.”
The daughter looked confused.
“But she followed you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elias reached for Anna’s hand.
“Because she was braver than I was.”
Anna squeezed his fingers.
“Don’t let him fool you,” she told their daughter. “He knew exactly where he wanted to go.”
Elias laughed.
Outside, snow covered the mountain.
But the road was no longer lonely.
