The Mafia Boss Watched Her Dance With His Brother—Then She Slipped Him a Bloody Note

Chapter 5

Luca stopped breathing.

His mother had supposedly died twelve years earlier.

He had attended her funeral.

He had carried her coffin.

He had spent years believing he had buried the last piece of his childhood.

Now she stood beneath the chandelier as if no time had passed.

“Mother?”

Victoria smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry.”

Luca stared.

Matteo appeared behind him, bleeding from the forehead.

Thomas Vieri was nowhere to be seen.

“You knew,” Luca said.

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to protect you.”

“By pretending to be dead?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the Council wanted my sons.”

Luca’s voice hardened.

“Then why did you let me build their empire?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because I thought I could control it.”

“You couldn’t.”

“No.”

She looked toward Matteo.

“Neither could he.”

Matteo stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria’s face became tired.

“Your father made a deal with the Council.”

“We know.”

“Then you know why he died.”

Luca nodded.

“But you don’t know why.”

Victoria looked at Elena.

“Her father does.”

Gabriel had followed them upstairs.

He was pale.

He leaned against the wall.

Victoria looked at him.

“Tell them.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“You tell them.”

Victoria took a breath.

“Your father didn’t die because he betrayed the Council.”

Luca stared.

“He died because he tried to expose them.”

“And you?”

“I helped him.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because they gave me a choice.”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Your sons or your husband.”

Luca’s eyes hardened.

“What did you choose?”

“I chose you.”

Silence.

“I made a deal.”

“With the Council?”

“Yes.”

“What did you promise?”

“My disappearance.”

Luca looked away.

“And Father?”

Victoria whispered:

“They killed him anyway.”

Matteo looked stunned.

“Why?”

“Because he refused to give them the ledger.”

Luca remembered the note.

The blood.

The ballroom.

The hidden vault.

“The ledger is here.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward the dance floor.

“Under the center medallion.”

Luca looked at the marble floor.

“The old vault.”

Victoria nodded.

“The Council has spent twelve years searching for it.”

Elena looked at her.

“Why does the ledger matter so much?”

Victoria answered:

“Because it contains every name.”

“Every name of what?”

“Everyone who bought the Council’s protection.”

Judges.

Police officials.

Politicians.

Businessmen.

Bankers.

People who had built careers by making crimes disappear.

Luca looked at the ballroom.

“How many?”

“Enough to destroy Chicago.”

Elena whispered:

“And enough to get everyone killed.”

Victoria nodded.

“Exactly.”

A loudspeaker crackled.

The ballroom doors slammed shut.

Every exit locked.

A man’s voice echoed through the room.

“Luca Romano.”

Everyone froze.

“Put the ledger on the floor.”

Luca looked around.

“Who is that?”

Victoria’s face went white.

“The Council.”

The voice continued.

“You have ten minutes.”

Luca looked at Elena.

Then Matteo.

Then his mother.

For the first time, the three Romano family members stood together.

Not as criminals.

Not as enemies.

As survivors.

Elena stepped forward.

“I know where the ledger is.”

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward the center of the dance floor.

She knelt.

Her fingers traced the marble medallion.

“Help me move it.”

Luca and Matteo joined her.

Together, they lifted the stone.

Beneath it was an iron hatch.

Luca opened it.

Inside was a metal box.

He pulled it out.

The Council’s voice returned.

“Leave it.”

Luca looked at the box.

Then at Elena.

She whispered:

“Don’t give it to them.”

Luca nodded.

He opened the box.

Inside was a black leather ledger.

And beneath it was a small envelope.

His name was written across it.

LUCA.

He opened it.

His father’s handwriting filled the first page.

One sentence made his blood run cold:

If you are reading this, the person who betrayed our family is standing in the room.

Luca slowly looked up.

Everyone was watching him.

Then he saw Elena’s face.

She was staring at the envelope.

She looked terrified.

Because she recognized the handwriting.

And she whispered:

“I know who it is.”
