The Mafia Boss Watched Her Dance With His Brother—Then She Slipped Him a Bloody Note

Chapter 11

The files were released at 4:17 a.m.

Thousands of pages.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Messages.

Names.

The Council had survived for decades because information was always controlled.

This time, it wasn’t.

Within minutes, news organizations across the country began downloading the files.

By sunrise, Chicago was in chaos.

Police departments opened investigations.

Federal agents arrived.

Politicians canceled appearances.

Three judges resigned.

A billionaire businessman fled the country.

Two bank executives were arrested.

And the Romano organization collapsed in less than seventy-two hours.

Luca surrendered himself.

Matteo did too.

Victoria cooperated fully.

Vincent entered witness protection.

Thomas Vieri received a long sentence.

Daniel Moretti disappeared before federal agents arrived.

But Elena stayed.

She testified.

So did Gabriel.

For months, the investigation continued.

Elena became known nationally as the woman who had slipped a bloody note to a mafia boss during a dance.

Reporters wanted interviews.

Publishers wanted her story.

Television producers offered money.

She refused most of them.

When one reporter asked why, Elena answered:

“Because this isn’t a fairy tale.”

“You saved the mafia boss.”

“No.”

“You did.”

Elena shook her head.

“I saved my father.”

“What about Luca?”

“He saved me.”

“Do you love him?”

Elena paused.

The reporter smiled.

“You don’t have to answer.”

Elena looked at the camera.

“I trust him.”

That was all she said.

Months later, Luca received a sentence for crimes committed while leading the Romano organization.

But because he had surrendered voluntarily and cooperated extensively, the sentence was significantly reduced.

Matteo received a separate sentence.

The brothers were allowed occasional visits.

During one visit, Matteo looked at Luca.

“I ruined everything.”

Luca shook his head.

“We inherited it.”

“That’s not an excuse.”

“No.”

Matteo looked down.

“I was jealous.”

“I know.”

“I thought if I took your place, I’d finally matter.”

Luca sighed.

“You always mattered.”

Matteo looked at him.

“Did I?”

“You’re my brother.”

That was enough.

Outside the prison, Elena waited.

When Luca eventually walked toward her, he wasn’t wearing an expensive suit.

No bodyguards.

No weapon.

Just a dark coat and tired eyes.

He stopped several feet away.

“You came.”

“I said I would.”

He smiled.

“Why?”

“Because I trust you.”

Luca looked at her.

“After everything?”

“Because of everything.”

They walked toward the car.

Elena asked:

“What will you do?”

“I don’t know.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

“Good?”

“You’ve spent your whole life knowing exactly what to do.”

“And now?”

“Now you get to learn how to live.”

Luca looked at her.

“You make it sound easy.”

“It isn’t.”

“Then why are you smiling?”

Elena smiled wider.

“Because we’re alive.”

He nodded.

For the first time in his life, Luca understood something his father had never been able to teach him.

Power wasn’t control.

Power was having the courage to let go.

The Romano empire was gone.

The Council was exposed.

The old family secrets were finally public.

And Elena’s father was free.

But one mystery remained.

Daniel Moretti.

He had disappeared without a trace.

Three weeks later, Elena received a letter.

No return address.

Only her name.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel standing beside a train.

On the back:

The Council was never the beginning.

Elena’s blood ran cold.

A second sentence followed.

It was only the first layer.
