The House Where Nobody Could Tell Them No
Chapter 6
The envelope contained a single key.
No note.
No explanation.
The key opened the basement archive.
Adrian wanted to go alone.
Elena refused.
The twins insisted on coming.
Eventually, all four descended the stairs.
The basement smelled of dust and old paper.
Adrian unlocked a steel cabinet.
Inside were financial records, security reports, and photographs.
Elena searched through them.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Victor Hale.
Adrian’s current chief operating officer.
“Victor?”
Adrian’s face changed.
“He’s worked for me for twelve years.”
“Was he in the house the night Celia died?”
Adrian looked at the security report.
“Yes.”
“So was Marcus Venn.”
“And three other people.”
“Who had access to the security system?”
“Victor.”
The room became quiet.
June suddenly pointed at a photograph.
“That’s him.”
Everyone turned.
The photograph showed Victor standing behind Celia at a company charity event.
On his wrist was a silver watch.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Impossible.”
Iris stepped closer.
“That’s the man we saw.”
Adrian stared at the photograph.
Then he sat down.
For years he had searched for an unknown killer.
He had never allowed himself to consider the person standing closest to him.
Elena found another document.
A security-system maintenance log.
Four years ago, someone had disabled cameras in the west wing for eleven minutes.
The authorization belonged to Victor.
“Why didn’t you know this?”
Adrian shook his head.
“The logs were altered.”
“By whom?”
He didn’t answer.
A sound came from the staircase.
Footsteps.
Someone was coming down.
Adrian immediately turned off the lights.
They waited.
The basement door opened.
A shadow entered.
The person walked toward the archive.
Then stopped.
Elena heard a whisper.
“Where is it?”
Adrian moved silently.
The intruder turned.
Victor Hale stood in the doorway.
He looked older than his photographs.
Calm.
Almost disappointed.
“You shouldn’t have opened that cabinet,” he said.
Adrian stepped forward.
“What did you do to my wife?”
Victor smiled.
“I wondered how long it would take you.”
Elena moved closer.
“Why?”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Because Celia discovered what Adrian had built.”
Adrian frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
“The offshore accounts. The political payments. The acquisition fund.”
Adrian stared.
“I never authorized those.”
Victor laughed.
“Exactly.”
He had created a secret financial network using Adrian’s company.
Celia discovered it.
She threatened to expose him.
Victor poisoned her.
But then he made a mistake.
He assumed Adrian would investigate.
Instead, Adrian protected the family name.
Victor used that weakness.
“Every time you buried the truth,” Victor said, “you helped me.”
Adrian looked devastated.
“You ruined my life.”
“No,” Victor replied. “You ruined your own life when you chose silence.”
Suddenly, the lights returned.
Security officers filled the basement.
Victor smiled.
“You called them?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
The twins stood behind her.
Iris held the porcelain rabbit.
June held the cassette.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Because the twins had not been hiding behind Elena.
They had been recording everything.
