Noah’s daughter, Lily, was twelve when she asked:
“Grandma, did you really almost sell this place?”
Sarah smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because your dad found water.”
Lily frowned.
“Could the water really save the farm?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Sarah explained.
The pipeline.
The cutoff.
The hill.
The spring.
The developer.
The fight.
The watershed.
Lily listened carefully.
“Was Grandpa scared?”
“Yes.”
“Was Grandma scared?”
Sarah laughed.
“Very.”
“Then why did you stay?”
Sarah looked toward the spring.
“Because sometimes being scared doesn’t mean you’re wrong.”
Lily nodded.
“Did the developer apologize?”
“Eventually.”
“Do you forgive him?”
Sarah smiled.
“Some things take time.”
She continued:
“But I don’t want my life to be about him.”
Lily nodded.
“Then what is it about?”
Sarah looked around.
“Family.”
“Land.”
“Water.”
“Taking care of what lasts longer than you.”
Lily smiled.
