The Billionaire’s Daughter Fell for Her Chauffeur — Never Knowing He Was Working Undercover

Chapter 4

The following morning, Madeline found Ethan waiting in the kitchen.

She froze.

“How did you get inside?”

“Security gave me access.”

“You scared me.”

“Sorry.”

He handed her coffee.

She stared.

“You made this?”

“Yes.”

“You’re full of surprises.”

“So I’ve been told.”

She smiled.

Then noticed something.

He was carrying a concealed weapon.

Her expression changed.

“You’re armed.”

“Yes.”

“You’ve always been?”

“Recently.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t want you nervous.”

“I’m not nervous.”

“You are.”

She sighed.

“You’re right.”

Ethan sat across from her.

He finally told her part of the truth.

He wasn’t just a chauffeur.

He was an undercover protection specialist.

Madeline stared.

“So my father hired a spy?”

“Security.”

“That’s a spy with better clothes.”

He smiled.

She laughed despite herself.

“How long have you been working for me?”

“Three months.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because we didn’t know who was leaking your information.”

She became serious.

“And now?”

“We’re close.”

“How close?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Too close.”

She understood.

“Someone in my father’s company.”

“Yes.”

“Someone near me.”

“Yes.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I should be angry.”

“You have every right.”

“But I’m not.”

He stared.

“Why?”

“Because you saved me.”

Ethan didn’t respond.

She continued:

“And because I trust you.”

Those words hit him harder than expected.

He had been trained to identify threats.

Not to deal with trust.

Then Madeline did something dangerous.

She touched his hand.

“Do you trust me?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Then stop hiding.”

He swallowed.

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if I tell you everything, you become more vulnerable.”

She shook her head.

“Maybe.”

“But?”

“I’d rather be afraid with the truth than safe inside a lie.”

Ethan looked away.

That sentence stayed with him.

Later that afternoon, the security team found evidence that someone had attempted to access Madeline’s home network.

The attack had failed.

But the source was traced to an executive office.

The name was Thomas Reed.

Chief financial officer.

A man Madeline had known since childhood.

Her father’s closest adviser.

She refused to believe it.

“Thomas?”

Ethan nodded.

“You know him.”

“He’s family.”

“No.”

Ethan corrected himself.

“He’s close to your family.”

She looked devastated.

“What would he want?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then don’t accuse him.”

“We aren’t.”

That night, Madeline confronted Thomas privately.

He denied everything.

But after she left, he called someone.

Ethan’s team intercepted the call.

The mystery deepened.

Thomas was not the mastermind.

He was being blackmailed.

The person controlling him knew about an old financial crime.

Someone wanted access to Sterling’s international accounts.

And Madeline was standing between them and billions.

The next step was obvious.

They needed to identify the person behind Thomas.

But Ethan had another problem.

Madeline had kissed him.

It happened suddenly.

In the hallway.

A quiet moment.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

Then she whispered:

“I don’t know when this happened.”

He knew exactly what she meant.

She kissed him.

He kissed her back.

Then immediately stepped away.

“This is dangerous.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“You’re my client.”

“Not anymore.”

“What?”

“You’re not my driver.”

She smiled.

“You’re the man protecting me.”

Ethan stared.

Neither of them knew how much that distinction would cost them.
