Single Dad Was Denied a Room at His Own Luxury Hotel—Then He Fired the Entire Staff
Chapter 8
The person in the security image was Margaret Cole’s brother.
His name was Thomas Cole.
He had worked as a consultant for the hotel.
Daniel thought he had disappeared after Margaret’s dismissal.
Apparently, he hadn’t.
Daniel ordered security to track him.
They found his vehicle two blocks away.
But Thomas was gone.
The missing documents were not.
Daniel returned to his office.
He reviewed the files.
The original acquisition agreement contained a clause he had never considered important.
The Mercer Grand had been built on property once owned by a development corporation.
That corporation had been partially controlled by Thomas Cole.
Daniel frowned.
Why would Thomas care about the documents?
He called his attorney.
“Check the original property agreement.”
“Why?”
“Something doesn’t make sense.”
The attorney reviewed the document.
Then called back.
“Daniel, there’s a problem.”
“What?”
“The hotel property has a historical easement.”
“Meaning?”
“A portion of the land cannot be sold or redeveloped without approval.”
“Who owns the easement?”
The attorney hesitated.
“An environmental trust.”
Daniel stared at the paperwork.
“Which one?”
“The Carter Foundation.”
Daniel froze.
“That’s impossible.”
The Carter Foundation had been dissolved decades earlier.
Or so he thought.
He asked the attorney to investigate.
The answer came two hours later.
The foundation still existed.
And its trustees had been searching for Daniel.
Why?
Because the hotel had been built over land connected to the old floodplain.
Thomas Cole had wanted to acquire the property because the easement prevented redevelopment.
If he could remove it, the hotel could potentially be sold for hundreds of millions.
Daniel realized the corruption wasn’t only about hotel management.
Someone had been trying to take control of the property itself.
The guest discrimination.
The financial manipulation.
The deleted complaints.
Everything had been part of a larger plan.
Make the hotel look unstable.
Drive down its value.
Create financial problems.
Then force Daniel to sell.
Thomas had been waiting for the right moment.
Daniel called the police.
But before they arrived, the hotel lost power.
The lobby went dark.
Emergency lights came on.
Guests began shouting.
Security reported movement near the basement.
Daniel grabbed a flashlight.
He went downstairs.
The basement contained the hotel’s electrical systems.
A maintenance door was open.
Thomas stood inside.
Daniel stopped.
“You’re under arrest.”
Thomas laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You’ve been trying to destroy my hotel.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“I’m trying to reclaim what my family built.”
“Your family didn’t build this.”
“My father did.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Your father sold the property.”
“Because he was forced.”
“By whom?”
Thomas smiled.
“Your father.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Thomas pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Daniel’s father standing beside Thomas’s father.
Daniel had never seen it.
Thomas continued.
“Your father cheated my family.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“I don’t believe you.”
“You will.”
Thomas dropped another file.
Inside were old contracts.
Daniel picked them up.
The documents appeared legitimate.
His father’s signature was there.
Thomas smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Daniel looked at the papers.
For the first time since he founded the Mercer Grand, he wondered if the entire foundation of his business had been built on a lie.
