Single Dad Bought an Old Bakery after Losing Everything—Then the CEO Who Fired Him Walked In

Chapter 13

Six months later, the bakery had become the busiest place on Maple Street.

Daniel added a second oven.

Then a small café section.

Then outdoor tables.

The faded sign was restored.

He kept the original name.

Bennett’s Bakery.

Not because it was perfect.

Because it had history.

People came for the bread.

They stayed for the atmosphere.

And many stayed because of Lily.

She did homework at the corner table.

She greeted customers.

She knew everyone’s favorite pastry.

She had become the bakery’s unofficial manager.

Victoria visited whenever she could.

At first, customers whispered.

“That’s the CEO.”

Then they learned she wasn’t there for business.

She was there for Daniel.

One Sunday morning, she arrived carrying flowers.

Daniel looked at her.

“What are those for?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“It’s your anniversary.”

He frowned.

“Anniversary of what?”

“The day you opened.”

He smiled.

“You remembered.”

“I told you.”

She set the flowers down.

“I remember everything.”

Lily ran in.

“Victoria!”

They hugged.

Daniel watched.

His heart felt full.

Later, after the morning rush, Victoria sat across from him.

“How’s business?”

“Good.”

“How good?”

“Very.”

“Are you going to expand?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Why not?”

“I don’t want twenty bakeries.”

“You could have twenty.”

“I don’t want twenty.”

“What do you want?”

Daniel looked through the window.

Lily was drawing on the sidewalk with chalk.

“You.”

Victoria went quiet.

He smiled.

“That sounded much smoother in my head.”

She laughed.

“Not bad.”

Then she reached across the table.

“I have something for you.”

It was a set of keys.

Daniel frowned.

“What are these?”

“A house.”

“What?”

“It’s across the street.”

He stared.

“You bought a house?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

She smiled.

“For us.”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

“Victoria…”

“I know we already have the bakery apartment.”

“But?”

“You said the bakery is your life.”

She squeezed his hand.

“So I wanted our life to be close to it.”

Daniel looked at the keys.

“You planned all this?”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

“You really are impossible.”

“That’s what you like about me.”

He leaned closer.

“Maybe.”

She smiled.

Then he kissed her.

Through the window, Lily saw them.

She covered her eyes dramatically.

“Gross!”

Both adults laughed.

For the first time in years, Daniel’s life felt bigger.

Not because he had more money.

Because he had more people to come home to.
