Gideon did not attack directly.
He began spreading rumors.
Thomas had stolen land.
Thomas had cheated settlers.
Thomas had married Margaret only to obtain her inheritance.
People began whispering.
Margaret hated it.
Thomas ignored it.
One evening, she confronted him.
“Why don’t you defend yourself?”
“Because the truth doesn’t need shouting.”
“They’re lying about you.”
“I know.”
“You could prove them wrong.”
“I could.”
“Then why don’t you?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Because I have nothing to prove to people who already decided what they believe.”
She shook her head.
“You are infuriating.”
He smiled.
“That is the first honest compliment you’ve given me.”
She laughed.
It surprised both of them.
Then the room became quiet.
Thomas looked at her.
Margaret realized how close they were.
He reached toward her face.
Stopped.
“I won’t.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because you didn’t choose me yet.”
Her heart beat faster.
“What if I did?”
He froze.
Margaret stepped closer.
“I haven’t.”
She smiled.
“But perhaps I’m beginning to.”
Thomas lowered his hand.
“Then I’ll wait.”
