She Sold Pies to Survive—Then the Rancher’s Daughter Took One Bite and Started to Cry

Chapter 5

The shot came from the eastern field.

Caleb pushed Amelia behind him.

“Stay inside.”

“No.”

“Amelia.”

“I’m not hiding while someone is shooting at us.”

He looked at her.

Then nodded.

They moved toward the barn.

Another gunshot cracked through the night air.

The horses panicked.

Clara started crying.

Margaret pulled her inside.

Caleb checked the perimeter.

No one was visible.

Then a bullet struck the barn wall.

Amelia flinched.

Caleb grabbed her wrist.

“Now.”

They ran.

Inside the barn, they found a man tied to a chair.

Amelia recognized him.

The ranch’s bookkeeper.

“Ben?”

He was bleeding from his forehead.

Caleb cut the ropes.

“Who did this?”

Ben coughed.

“I don’t know.”

“Where’s the shooter?”

“Gone.”

Amelia noticed something beside him.

A folder.

She picked it up.

Inside were bank statements from fourteen years earlier.

The same names.

The same code.

17-4-9.

And one account.

Hart Family Trust.

Amelia’s heart stopped.

“My family had a trust?”

Caleb looked confused.

“Apparently.”

Ben whispered:

“Your father created it.”

“When?”

“After the barn fire.”

Amelia shook her head.

“Why?”

Ben looked at her.

“To protect Evelyn.”

The room went quiet.

“What does that mean?”

“Your father knew someone wanted her dead.”

“Who?”

Ben closed his eyes.

“Samuel Granger.”

“But he died ten years ago.”

“He didn’t.”

Amelia stared.

“What?”

Caleb stepped forward.

“Ben, are you saying Samuel is alive?”

Ben nodded weakly.

“He changed his name.”

“To what?”

Ben whispered:

“Thomas Reed.”

Caleb froze.

The ranch foreman’s name.

The quiet man who had worked for Caleb for eleven years.

Amelia remembered him.

He had been at the ranch that morning.

He had offered to fix the broken fence.

He had watched her from across the yard.

Caleb immediately drew his weapon.

“Where is Thomas?”

Ben pointed toward the barn doors.

“Gone.”

Amelia whispered:

“He was here.”

Caleb looked at her.

“He was the one watching us.”

The sheriff arrived.

The ranch was searched.

Thomas was gone.

But his room contained photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Evelyn.

Clara.

Amelia.

Caleb.

Even Amelia’s sister Lily.

He had been watching the family for years.

But one photo was different.

It showed Evelyn standing beside a man Amelia didn’t recognize.

On the back:

The father of Clara.

Amelia looked at Caleb.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“That’s me.”

She stared at the photograph.

The man looked like Caleb.

But it was impossible.

The date was two years before he and Evelyn supposedly met.

Amelia looked again.

Then she noticed the man’s eyes.

Same face.

Different age.

Caleb took the picture.

His expression changed.

“I have an identical photograph.”

“Where?”

“In my grandfather’s study.”

They returned to the farmhouse.

Caleb opened an old locked cabinet.

Inside was the same photograph.

But written on the back was a different name.

Matthew Dawson.

Caleb stared.

“That’s my older brother.”

Amelia frowned.

“Your brother?”

“He died before I was born.”

“Then why does he look exactly like you?”

Caleb didn’t answer.

Margaret walked into the room.

She saw the photograph.

Then sat down.

“Because your grandfather lied.”

Caleb looked at her.

“What are you saying?”

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“You weren’t born Caleb Dawson.”

Silence.

Amelia stared.

Margaret continued:

“Your real name is Matthew Dawson.”
