She Sold Paintings on the Street to Survive — Until the Wealthy Merchant’s Offer Shocked Everyone!
Chapter 11
Nathaniel’s health began to fail during the winter.
He had never complained.
But Clara noticed the changes.
He tired easily.
His hands trembled.
He sometimes stopped halfway through a sentence.
One evening, she found him sitting alone beside the fire.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you would worry.”
“I already am.”
He smiled.
“Your father would have been proud.”
Clara sat beside him.
“Do you still feel guilty?”
“For what?”
“For not saving him.”
Nathaniel stared into the flames.
“Yes.”
“You were young.”
“I should have known.”
“No one can know what another person hides.”
Nathaniel reached into his coat.
He removed a small box.
Inside was a ring.
A simple gold ring with a tiny blue stone.
“Your mother’s.”
Clara stared.
“She gave it to me before she died.”
“Why?”
“She asked me to give it to you when you were old enough to understand.”
Clara held it carefully.
“What did she say?”
Nathaniel’s voice softened.
“She said you would spend your life believing your father died because he was weak.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
“She wanted you to know he died because he was brave.”
Clara pressed the ring to her chest.
Nathaniel continued.
“Never let what happened to him become a reason to hate the world.”
She nodded.
“I won’t.”
“Good.”
He smiled.
“You have already done more than any of us.”
Nathaniel died before sunrise three weeks later.
His funeral filled the church.
Merchants came.
Farmers came.
Servants came.
Widows came.
Children from Clara’s school came.
Clara stood beside the coffin.
She did not cry until everyone had left.
Then she placed one of her father’s brushes beside Nathaniel’s hands.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
A week later, she returned to her studio.
The portrait she had painted of Nathaniel was nearly finished.
She studied it.
She had painted the wealthiest man she knew.
But the portrait did not show his money.
It showed his regret.
His courage.
His loneliness.
And, finally, peace.
At the bottom, she wrote one sentence.
He learned that wealth means nothing if it cannot be used to repair what has been broken.
The painting became the most famous work she ever created.
But Clara never sold it.
