She Refused His $1,000,000 Offer—Then He Gave Her Something More Valuable
Chapter 6
We didn’t know whether Margaret was alive.
The police had no leads.
Security footage showed a black van.
No license plate.
No faces.
Ethan blamed himself.
“This is my fault.”
“No.”
“They followed us.”
“They knew about the ledger before we did.”
He paced the room.
I watched him.
“Stop.”
He looked at me.
“What?”
“You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Trying to solve everything alone.”
He smiled bitterly.
“I’m the billionaire. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“You’re supposed to trust people.”
He looked at me.
“That’s difficult.”
“I know.”
We searched the ledger for clues.
One page had a symbol.
A small blue flower.
My mother used to draw it in the margins of letters.
I remembered.
“The winter garden.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Margaret’s greenhouse?”
“No.”
“My mother took me somewhere else.”
“Where?”
“A children’s hospital garden.”
We went there.
The garden had been closed for renovation.
Near an old bench was a plaque.
For the children who deserve another spring.
Underneath was my mother’s handwriting.
A date.
And a locker number.
We found another key.
Locker 17.
Inside was a flash drive.
It contained video footage.
My mother.
Daniel Sterling.
And Margaret.
They were discussing the trust.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Emma, if you are seeing this, I want you to understand one thing.”
She smiled.
“You were never supposed to inherit money from this.”
I swallowed.
“You were supposed to inherit choices.”
Then she explained why she had hidden the ledger.
She wanted the trust to return to its original purpose.
But she didn’t trust the Sterling family to do it.
So she created a legal mechanism.
If the original records were found, control would shift from the Sterling family to an independent community board.
The only person authorized to activate the transfer was the descendant of the person who protected the ledger.
Me.
Ethan stared.
“You?”
I nodded.
“Apparently.”
My mother continued.
“Do not let anyone buy you.”
Her voice softened.
“If someone offers you a fortune, remember that your value was never the price they placed on you.”
I started crying.
Ethan reached for my hand.
She continued.
“Your brother may need help. Accept it if it comes without conditions. Accept kindness without allowing anyone to own you.”
I looked at Ethan.
He had tears in his eyes.
Then my mother said something else.
“Ethan, if you’re watching this too…”
He froze.
“She will challenge you.”
A tiny smile appeared on my mother’s face.
“Let her.”
The video ended.
Silence.
Ethan looked stunned.
“She knew me.”
“Apparently.”
“She knew we’d meet.”
“Maybe.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“She knew you would need someone to stand beside you.”
I smiled.
“She did.”
Then we heard a sound.
Someone was in the hospital garden.
We ran outside.
Margaret.
Alive.
Weak.
She had escaped.
She had been held in a nearby house but managed to get away.
She had one final piece of information.
“The person behind all this isn’t Richard.”
Ethan stopped.
“What?”
“Richard is scared.”
“Then who?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Your mother.”
