She Hired the Poor Scholarship Student to Save Her Grades — Then She Fell for the One Guy She Was Afraid to Love
Chapter 2
Their first tutoring session lasted forty minutes.
The first twenty were spent arguing.
“You can’t explain something like that.”
“Why not?”
“Because nobody talks like that.”
“It’s an economics concept.”
“It sounds like a robot wrote it.”
Ethan sighed.
He took the textbook away from her.
“Okay.”
He grabbed a napkin.
“Imagine your father owns five hotels.”
Madison looked interested.
“He does.”
“I know.”
He continued.
“One hotel is losing money. You have three choices.”
“Sell it.”
“Wrong.”
“Fire everyone.”
“Also wrong.”
“Raise the prices.”
“Still wrong.”
She glared at him.
“Then what?”
“Figure out why it’s losing money.”
He started drawing diagrams.
Ten minutes later, Madison understood.
She stared at the napkin.
“That actually makes sense.”
Ethan smiled.
“That’s because you stopped trying to memorize everything.”
She looked at him.
“You smile a lot when you’re right.”
“No.”
“What?”
“I smile when you’re wrong.”
She laughed before she could stop herself.
That became the pattern.
He taught.
She argued.
He refused to be impressed by her name.
She slowly stopped trying to impress him with hers.
By the third week, Madison was looking forward to their sessions.
That was a problem.
Because Chloe had already noticed.
“You like him.”
Madison nearly choked on her coffee.
“Who?”
“Your tutor.”
“No.”
“You do.”
“He’s just good at teaching.”
Chloe smirked.
“That’s not what your face says.”
Madison looked away.
“He’s not my type.”
“What is your type?”
She hesitated.
“Someone confident.”
“Ethan is confident.”
“Someone rich.”
“Ethan owns exactly one pair of decent shoes.”
“Someone who fits into my life.”
Chloe laughed.
“That sounds like you’re trying very hard to convince yourself.”
Madison said nothing.
Because she already knew Chloe was right.
