Charlotte wanted to change it.
Ethan refused.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to stay because of a piece of paper.”
“Then why are you still here?”
He looked at her.
“Because I want to be.”
She smiled.
“So stay.”
“I am.”
The company flourished.
Charlotte became more confident.
Ethan took on a formal role as legal advisor.
Together, they exposed several financial irregularities that had existed under Daniel’s influence.
Then another secret appeared.
Charlotte discovered that Ethan had been offered a position at another firm.
A very prestigious one.
She confronted him.
“You were going to leave.”
“I considered it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want you to think I was staying because of you.”
She was hurt.
“You could have told me.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me now.”
He looked at her.
“I turned it down.”
“Why?”
“Because this is where I want to be.”
“With the company?”
“With you.”
Charlotte’s heart raced.
She stepped closer.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
She kissed him.
This time, there were no cameras.
No family.
No contract.
Just them.
When they separated, Ethan laughed.
“What?”
“That was much better than the first one.”
She smiled.
“You’re annoying.”
“You married me.”
She laughed.
“Again with that.”
Then the door opened.
Eleanor stood there.
“Oh.”
Charlotte froze.
Her grandmother smiled.
“I’ll come back later.”
“Grandmother!”
Eleanor walked away laughing.
For the first time, Charlotte laughed too.
She no longer cared about pretending.
She had fallen in love with her fake husband.
And she wasn’t afraid of it anymore.
