She Helped a Homeless Stranger… Not Knowing He Was a Billionaire in Disguise
Chapter 11
Victor Cross lived in a small cabin overlooking a frozen lake.
When Nathaniel arrived, his father was sitting outside.
He looked older than the photographs.
But his eyes were sharp.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
Nathaniel stopped.
“Mom is alive.”
Victor nodded.
“I know.”
“You let me think she was dead.”
“I had to.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
Nathaniel’s voice broke.
“Do you know what that did to me?”
Victor lowered his eyes.
“I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
Olivia stood behind him.
Victor looked at her.
“James Bennett’s daughter.”
Olivia nodded.
“You knew my father.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you put my name in your files?”
Victor sighed.
“Because I promised him I’d protect you.”
“From Richard?”
“From everyone.”
Victor explained the truth.
James Bennett had discovered Richard’s network.
He had hidden the original ledger.
But before he could expose it, Richard found out.
James made a deal.
He would disappear.
In exchange, Richard would leave his family alone.
Olivia’s father had spent the final years of his life watching from a distance.
“He loved you,” Victor said.
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn’t he come back?”
“Because he thought Richard would kill you.”
She looked away.
Nathaniel asked:
“Where is Richard?”
Victor stared at the lake.
“Close.”
“How close?”
“He has been watching this cabin.”
Nathaniel’s body tensed.
“Then why aren’t we leaving?”
“Because this is where he wants us.”
A gunshot cracked through the trees.
Everyone ducked.
Victor pulled them inside.
Another shot.
Then another.
Federal agents surrounded the cabin.
Richard was trapped.
He shouted from the woods.
“Victor!”
Victor stepped toward the window.
“Richard!”
“You ruined everything!”
“No.”
Victor looked at Nathaniel.
“My son did.”
Richard laughed.
“Your son is just like you.”
Nathaniel stepped outside.
Richard stood among the trees.
“You wanted the truth?”
Richard’s face was twisted with rage.
“Your father built Cross Meridian.”
“He built it to protect people.”
“He built it to control them.”
Nathaniel shook his head.
“You stole from him.”
“I improved it.”
Richard raised his weapon.
Federal agents ordered him to surrender.
He hesitated.
Then looked at Nathaniel.
“You really think your assistant saved you?”
Olivia stepped forward.
“She did.”
Richard smiled.
“Then you don’t know who she is.”
Olivia froze.
“What?”
Richard looked at Nathaniel.
“Ask her father why he chose your family.”
Nathaniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Richard said:
“James Bennett wasn’t just an auditor.”
Olivia’s heart stopped.
Richard smiled.
“He was the person who created the original network.”
Silence.
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
Richard laughed.
“Your father didn’t discover the corruption.”
“He created it.”
Then Richard surrendered.
Olivia stood motionless.
Everything she believed about her father had collapsed.
Nathaniel looked at her.
“Don’t believe him.”
“But what if it’s true?”
Victor answered.
“It’s not.”
He looked at Olivia.
“Your father infiltrated the network.”
Richard had twisted the truth.
James had created the accounting structure used to expose the fraud.
He wasn’t the architect.
He was the man who helped bring it down.
Richard knew that.
And he had used Olivia’s grief as his final weapon.
But Richard had made one mistake.
He had confessed on a federal recording.
And this time…
there was nowhere left to hide.
