She Found Who Was Robbing the Don’s Syndicate—Then He Claimed Her Before Everyone

Chapter 13

By dawn, the entire district had gathered outside Matteo’s trading house.

Caruso arrived first.

He brought armed men, merchants, captains, and several local officials.

He accused Matteo of theft.

He accused Elena of forgery.

He claimed the warehouse records had been altered.

Then Matteo appeared.

He walked down the steps with Elena beside him.

No armed guards.

No threats.

Just the ledger in his hand.

Caruso smiled.

“You’re finished.”

Matteo looked at the crowd.

“For twenty years, men have feared my name.”

He held up the ledger.

“Today, I am going to tell you why.”

The crowd grew silent.

Matteo spoke for nearly an hour.

He admitted the crimes committed under his family’s name.

He revealed the stolen wages.

The manipulated food prices.

The missing shipments.

The deaths.

He did not excuse himself.

He did not claim ignorance.

He accepted responsibility for what his house had allowed.

Elena stood beside him.

Then she presented the evidence.

The forged signatures.

The payments.

The letters.

The records.

Finally, the ledger.

Caruso tried to leave.

Two guards blocked him.

“You work for me!” he shouted.

One guard shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Matteo.

“We work for the man who tells us the truth.”

Caruso’s face collapsed.

The magistrates arrived before noon.

Thomas testified.

Several guards testified.

Even Lorenzo, wounded but alive, confessed before being taken away.

Caruso was arrested.

The conspiracy that had survived for decades finally broke apart.

But Matteo was not the same man afterward.

He closed the gambling rooms.

Ended the protection racket.

Returned stolen wages.

Paid debts that had been forced upon poor families.

And he gave Elena control over the trading books.

“You should run them,” he told her.

“You trust me that much?”

“I trust you more than I trust myself.”

She smiled.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It is.”

Weeks passed.

Then months.

The city began to change.

People who once crossed the street when Matteo approached now looked him in the eye.

He was still feared.

But slowly, he became respected.

One evening, Elena found him standing alone beside the river.

“You’ve been quiet.”

“I was thinking.”

“That can be dangerous too.”

He smiled.

Then he reached into his coat.

He held out a small ring.

It belonged to his mother.

Elena stared at it.

“I found it in the old fort.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because my mother spent her life protecting the truth.”

He took Elena’s hand.

“And you spent yours finding it.”

She looked at him.

“Matteo…”

“I know what people will say.”

“They already say plenty.”

He smiled.

“Then let them.”

He stepped closer.

“I have spent my entire life claiming things that were never mine.”

His fingers closed gently around hers.

“You are the first thing I want without taking.”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then don’t claim me.”

Matteo nodded.

“I won’t.”

He paused.

“Unless you choose me.”
