She Found a Forgotten Case File at Work — Then Realized the Recent Murders Were Following Its 20-Year-Old List
Chapter 7
Thomas Hale disappeared that afternoon.
His office was empty.
His car was abandoned outside the courthouse.
And every file connected to the old investigation vanished from the system.
Mara knew what that meant.
Someone was cleaning up.
Daniel had no badge.
No authority.
But he stayed with her.
“Where would he go?”
Mara thought about the old photographs.
“Somewhere connected to my father.”
They found the answer in an abandoned warehouse outside Philadelphia.
Inside, they discovered dozens of boxes.
Newspaper clippings.
Photographs.
Police reports.
All related to the same five people.
Thomas had been watching them for years.
Mara found a folder labeled:
JONATHAN BENNETT — FINAL REPORT
Inside was a letter.
Her father had written it to her.
Mara’s hands shook as she read.
If you’re reading this, I’m probably gone.
I need you to know something.
I never abandoned you.
She stopped.
Tears blurred the page.
The people responsible for the murders are protected by people inside the justice system.
I tried to expose them.
I failed.
So I created a record they could never destroy.
Five names.
Five witnesses.
Five people who knew what happened.
Mara turned the page.
Only one sentence remained.
But one of them was innocent.
She looked at Daniel.
“Which one?”
Before he could answer, a gunshot shattered the window.
Daniel pushed Mara down.
Another bullet struck the wall.
They crawled behind a steel cabinet.
Then silence.
Daniel looked outside.
No one.
Mara found another document beneath the letter.
It contained a photograph of the five men.
Someone had drawn a red circle around Frank Reed.
Daniel stared at it.
“My father.”
Mara shook her head.
“Wait.”
Below the photograph was a handwritten note.
FRANK REED DID NOT TAKE THE MONEY.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“Then who did?”
Mara looked at the payment records.
Thomas Hale.
She whispered:
“Thomas.”
A floorboard creaked behind them.
They turned.
Thomas stood in the doorway.
Blood covered his shirt.
He raised his hands.
“I’m not the killer.”
Mara stared.
“Then who are you running from?”
Thomas looked at her.
“The person who hired them.”
