She Fell for the College Janitor Everyone Looked Down On
Chapter 12
The hearing lasted four days.
Witnesses filled the council chamber.
The college trustees denied everything.
Judge Mercer claimed the documents were forged.
Eleanor’s father remained silent.
Samuel finally confronted him.
“Did you sign the payments?”
His father-in-law-to-be looked exhausted.
“Yes.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Why?”
He looked at her.
“Because I was afraid.”
Samuel said nothing.
“I thought I could control them,” the older man continued.
“I thought I could protect our family by cooperating.”
“You destroyed mine.”
“I know.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“You knew Professor Reed was innocent.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you let everyone believe he was a criminal?”
Her father looked down.
“Because by then I had become a coward.”
The admission silenced the room.
Then the original ledger was presented.
The evidence was undeniable.
Mercer was arrested.
The trustees were removed.
College funds were audited.
The false land transfers were overturned.
Nathaniel Reed’s reputation was restored publicly.
The council issued a formal statement clearing his name.
Samuel attended the ceremony alone.
Eleanor watched from the back.
When the announcement was read, Samuel lowered his head.
For years he had carried his father’s disgrace.
Now he could finally set it down.
Afterward, Eleanor found him outside.
“Are you happy?”
Samuel looked toward the college.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re free.”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Then what will you do?”
He looked at her.
“I’ve spent years cleaning the rooms of men who thought they were better than me.”
“And?”
“I think I’d like to teach.”
Her face brightened.
“You’d be wonderful.”
He laughed.
“I’m not sure the college will want me.”
“They will.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I told my uncle.”
Samuel shook his head.
“You’re dangerous.”
“I’ve been told.”
They stood quietly.
Then Samuel took her hand.
“I love you.”
Eleanor’s breath caught.
She smiled.
“I know.”
He laughed.
“That isn’t a very romantic answer.”
She stepped closer.
“I love you too.”
And for a moment, nothing else mattered.
But outside the gates, Caldwell was watching.
And he had one final secret.
