“Send the Poor, Ugly Girl—He’ll Reject Her!” They Laughed… Until the Millionaire Stood Up
Chapter 11
The wedding happened six months later.
It wasn’t at the Cole mansion.
It wasn’t in a luxury hotel.
Claire chose a small garden beside her mother’s rehabilitation center.
There were flowers.
Old friends.
A few trusted family members.
And sunlight.
No cameras.
No business partners.
No carefully selected society guests.
Just people who mattered.
Claire walked down the path wearing a simple ivory dress.
She didn’t try to look thinner.
She didn’t try to look richer.
She didn’t try to become someone else.
She walked exactly as she was.
Adrian waited for her.
When she reached him, he whispered:
“You’re beautiful.”
She smiled.
“You’d better mean that.”
“I’ve never meant anything more.”
The ceremony was short.
When they exchanged vows, Adrian spoke first.
“I promise never to confuse protecting you with controlling you.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I promise never to ask you to become smaller so I can feel bigger.”
She took a breath.
“And I promise to choose you even on the days when life is difficult.”
They kissed.
Everyone applauded.
Even Claire’s mother smiled.
After the ceremony, Claire stood beneath the trees.
She looked toward the old building across the courtyard.
Adrian joined her.
“You’re thinking about your father.”
“Yes.”
“What would he think?”
She smiled.
“He’d probably complain about the flowers.”
Adrian laughed.
Then Claire looked at her wedding ring.
“I used to think being chosen meant being beautiful enough.”
“And now?”
“I think it means being known.”
Adrian touched her hand.
“Then I know you.”
“How?”
“You work too hard.”
She laughed.
“You worry about everyone.”
“True.”
“You pretend you’re stronger than you feel.”
She looked at him.
“Maybe.”
“You always save the best food for your mother.”
Her smile softened.
“And?”
“You still look for sunrise.”
She nodded.
“And I love all of it.”
Claire rested her head on his shoulder.
Across the courtyard, Vanessa watched from a distance.
She had pleaded guilty.
She had lost everything she had tried to steal.
But Claire wasn’t interested in revenge anymore.
Vanessa approached.
“I owe you an apology.”
Claire waited.
“I was cruel because I was jealous.”
Claire said nothing.
“I thought beauty gave people power.”
“It doesn’t.”
“I know that now.”
Vanessa walked away.
Claire watched her go.
Then turned to Adrian.
“I thought I’d feel better.”
“You don’t?”
“I feel free.”
He smiled.
“That may be better.”
Claire kissed him.
For the first time, she understood.
She had not won because a millionaire chose her.
She had won because she had finally chosen herself.
