Poor Janitor Single Dad Saved an 8-Year-Old From a Sinking Bus — Unaware Her Mom Was a Billionaire
Chapter 5
Elena’s assistant returned the next morning with a report.
Daniel Brooks.
Thirty-seven.
Single father.
One daughter.
No criminal history.
No significant debt.
Worked in school maintenance.
Second job three nights a week at a warehouse.
Rented a small home.
No investments.
No social connections to wealthy families.
No media history.
Elena read the report twice.
“That’s all?”
“That’s what we found.”
“He’s really just…”
She stopped.
The assistant smiled.
“Just what?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
She stared at the photograph.
Daniel looked nothing like the men who surrounded her professionally.
He wasn’t polished.
He wasn’t ambitious in the conventional sense.
He wasn’t trying to enter her world.
He seemed completely comfortable outside it.
Sophie noticed the photograph that evening.
“That’s Mr. Daniel.”
Elena turned.
“You remember him?”
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“He saved me.”
Sophie took the photograph.
“He’s nice.”
Elena smiled.
“You talked to him for five minutes.”
“That’s enough.”
Elena laughed.
The next day, she drove to Jefferson Elementary.
She didn’t tell anyone who she was.
She wanted to see Daniel without the protection of her reputation.
She found him cleaning a hallway.
He was wearing an old uniform.
Headphones around his neck.
He looked up.
“You.”
Elena smiled.
“Me.”
“What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to thank you.”
“You already did.”
“Not enough.”
He smiled.
“Then buy yourself lunch and feel better.”
She laughed.
“You’re difficult.”
“I’ve been told.”
She watched him work.
“Do you always do this?”
“Clean?”
“Work this much.”
“I have a daughter.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“It’s the answer.”
Elena became quiet.
“What’s her name?”
“Lily.”
“How old?”
“Eight.”
“Same age as Sophie.”
Daniel nodded.
“Pretty much.”
Elena hesitated.
“Do you have family?”
“No.”
“Just your daughter?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s difficult.”
“It can be.”
She watched him carefully.
“Do you ever wish your life were different?”
Daniel stopped cleaning.
“Sometimes.”
“What would you change?”
He thought.
“Nothing that involves replacing my daughter.”
Elena smiled.
“That’s a good answer.”
He looked at her.
“Why are you asking?”
She didn’t know.
Maybe she wanted to understand him.
Maybe she wanted to understand why he had risked his life.
Maybe she was simply curious.
But something deeper had already begun.
