Poor Janitor Single Dad Saved an 8-Year-Old From a Sinking Bus — Unaware Her Mom Was a Billionaire
Chapter 3
The rescue took twenty minutes.
It felt like an hour.
Daniel helped three more children escape through the broken window.
Then he returned for the driver.
The man was injured.
“Leave me.”
“No.”
“You’ll drown.”
Daniel grabbed him.
“Not today.”
Together, Daniel and the driver reached the opening.
Police officers pulled them out.
The bus finally tilted completely.
Its rear disappeared beneath the floodwater.
Daniel collapsed onto the road.
His lungs burned.
He looked around desperately.
“Lily!”
A teacher rushed toward him.
“Mr. Brooks?”
“Where’s my daughter?”
The teacher looked confused.
“Lily isn’t on this bus.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“Her bus left twenty minutes earlier.”
He stared.
The bus he had nearly drowned in wasn’t his daughter’s.
He had risked everything for a group of children who weren’t his.
One of the police officers approached.
“Sir, you saved at least four children.”
Daniel looked toward the bus.
“I thought my daughter was on it.”
The officer understood.
“That explains why you went in.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the children being treated.
“Doesn’t matter.”
Among them was Sophie.
She was wrapped in a silver emergency blanket.
She spotted Daniel.
“Mr. Hero!”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Hey.”
She ran toward him.
A paramedic tried to stop her.
Sophie hugged his waist.
“Thank you.”
Daniel crouched.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
“My backpack got wet.”
He smiled.
“That’s tragic.”
She laughed.
Then she asked:
“Are you my teacher?”
“No.”
“Then why did you save me?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because you needed help.”
Sophie smiled.
A few minutes later, a convoy of black vehicles arrived.
The police immediately became more formal.
A woman stepped out.
Elegant.
Composed.
Terrified.
She ran toward Sophie.
“Sophie!”
The little girl turned.
“Mom!”
Daniel watched as they embraced.
The woman looked at him.
She was in her early forties.
Perfectly dressed despite the rain.
Her name was Elena Bennett.
The CEO of Bennett Global.
A business empire worth billions.
Daniel didn’t know that.
All he knew was that she was a mother.
And her daughter was alive.
Elena looked at Daniel.
“Did you save her?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
For a moment, she couldn’t speak.
Then she said:
“I don’t know how to thank you.”
Daniel gave her a small smile.
“You don’t have to.”
Elena looked at the soaked janitor standing in front of her.
His clothes were cheap.
His shoes were ruined.
His hands were trembling from the cold.
He looked exhausted.
But he was alive.
And because of him, her daughter was alive too.
That moment changed both their lives.
Neither knew it yet.
