My Neighbor Asked Me to Watch Her Daughter for One Hour… She Didn’t Come Back Until Sunrise

Chapter 11

At 5:43 a.m., the news van turned toward Hawthorne’s original warehouse.

Daniel had never seen it before.

The building was hidden behind a chain-link fence at the edge of an industrial district.

Officially, it had been condemned.

But lights were visible inside.

Evan pointed.

“That’s it.”

Claire stared.

“How is it still standing?”

“Because the demolition was fake.”

Daniel looked at him.

“They built a new facility around it.”

“Exactly.”

The van stopped two blocks away.

Margaret’s colleague handed Daniel a radio.

“Once we start broadcasting, you have ten minutes before the signal can be shut down.”

Daniel looked at the children.

“Stay here.”

Lily shook her head.

“I want to help.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You already are.”

Claire kissed Sophie.

“We’ll come back.”

The adults moved toward the warehouse.

Marcus suddenly appeared from behind a vehicle.

Daniel stopped.

“Marcus?”

Marcus was bleeding from his shoulder.

“I told you I’d catch up.”

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

“You’re alive.”

“Barely.”

They hugged.

Marcus pointed toward the building.

“Security is everywhere.”

Evan nodded.

“We don’t need to fight them.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do we need?”

“Proof.”

Inside the warehouse, they found rows of old filing cabinets.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Paper records.

Everything Hawthorne had tried to bury.

Evan moved quickly.

“Get the master files.”

Daniel found a cabinet labeled with years.

He opened it.

Inside were hundreds of folders.

He saw Emily’s name.

He froze.

Claire touched his shoulder.

“Daniel.”

He opened the folder.

There were reports about his wife.

Surveillance.

Photographs.

Notes about her movements.

And one final document.

Termination authorized.

Signed:

Richard Hawthorne.

Daniel’s hands shook.

“He ordered it.”

Evan looked.

“Yes.”

Daniel closed the folder.

“We’re taking everything.”

Marcus connected a portable drive.

The files began transferring.

17%.

29%.

42%.

A siren sounded.

“They know we’re here,” Marcus said.

Evan looked at the clock.

5:51.

“We have nine minutes.”

Suddenly a voice came over the warehouse speakers.

Richard Hawthorne.

“You never understood the purpose of this place.”

Daniel looked upward.

Hawthorne continued.

“People like Emily always believed truth was enough.”

A pause.

“It isn’t.”

Daniel shouted:

“You killed my wife!”

Hawthorne’s voice remained calm.

“She chose the consequences.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“She was a mother.”

“She was a liability.”

Daniel nearly charged toward the control room.

Evan stopped him.

“That’s what he wants.”

The file transfer reached 81%.

Hawthorne continued.

“Daniel, you have a daughter.”

Daniel froze.

“Think about what happens if you keep going.”

Daniel looked at Lily’s photograph on his phone.

Then he looked at the files.

His wife’s face.

Claire.

Sophie.

Evan.

Three years of lies.

He raised the radio.

“You made one mistake.”

Silence.

“You thought fear would keep everyone quiet.”

Daniel smiled.

“But you forgot something.”

“What?”

“People talk.”

Margaret’s colleague activated the broadcast.

Every file began uploading to multiple news organizations.

88%.

92%.

95%.

Hawthorne’s voice changed.

“Stop.”

98%.

Daniel looked at the screen.

99%.

100%.

The upload completed.

Across the country, journalists began receiving the files.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Environmental reports.

Witness testimony.

Operation Sunrise.

Everything.

Then the warehouse doors opened.

Hawthorne walked inside.

Alone.

No security.

No weapon.

He looked at Daniel.

“You’ve ruined everything.”

Daniel stared.

“No.”

He held up the file containing Emily’s photograph.

“You did.”

Hawthorne’s face hardened.

Outside, sirens approached.

Real police this time.

Federal vehicles followed.

Hawthorne looked toward the doors.

Then back at Daniel.

“You think this ends with me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Claire.

“It ends with the truth.”

Hawthorne was arrested minutes later.

But Daniel wasn’t prepared for what happened next.

As officers took Hawthorne away, one agent approached Evan.

“Mr. Bennett?”

Evan nodded.

“We need to talk.”

Evan looked concerned.

The agent lowered his voice.

“We found something in the files.”

“What?”

The agent looked at Daniel.

“Your wife’s case isn’t the only unsolved death connected to Hawthorne.”

He paused.

“There are seventeen.”
