My CEO… She Paid Me to Be Her Husband for 1 Year — Then Our ‘Fake’ Marriage Turned Real
Chapter 13
On their tenth wedding anniversary, Daniel surprised Victoria.
He took her back to the courthouse where they had first married.
She stared at the building.
“You brought me here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because this is where our fake marriage started.”
She smiled.
“And where did the real one start?”
Daniel took her hand.
“Right here too.”
They walked inside.
The same hallway.
The same wooden benches.
The same quiet atmosphere.
But they were different people now.
Older.
Wiser.
More certain.
Daniel pulled out a small box.
Victoria laughed.
“Another ring?”
“Not this time.”
Inside was the original marriage contract.
Framed.
She stared at it.
“You kept it?”
“Of course.”
The contract had been signed ten years earlier.
At the bottom, Daniel had written a handwritten note:
Expired after one year. Love didn’t.
Victoria wiped away a tear.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“I know.”
She hugged him.
“Do you remember what I told you?”
“Which part?”
“No falling in love.”
Daniel laughed.
“You were terrible at that rule.”
“So were you.”
They stood together in the courthouse hallway.
Then Lily arrived.
She was twenty now.
She hugged both of them.
“Happy anniversary.”
“Thank you.”
She looked at the framed contract.
“You still have that?”
“Your father insists.”
Lily smiled.
“Good.”
They left the courthouse together.
Outside, Chicago was alive with noise.
Cars.
People.
Wind.
Life.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“Ready?”
“For what?”
“Whatever comes next.”
She smiled.
“Always.”
They walked toward their car.
The contract had started as a transaction.
A desperate CEO needed protection.
A struggling father needed financial security.
Neither expected love.
Neither expected family.
Neither expected the other to become home.
But sometimes the most important relationships begin in the strangest ways.
Sometimes people enter your life for practical reasons.
Sometimes they stay for reasons neither can explain.
And sometimes…
A fake marriage is only fake until two people realize that the feelings between them were never part of the contract.
They were real from the beginning.
Daniel opened the car door for Victoria.
She smiled.
“Where are we going?”
“Home.”
She looked at him.
“Which home?”
Daniel smiled.
“Ours.”
And together, they drove into the city they had built their life in.
No contract.
No conditions.
No expiration date.
Just love.
