My Best Friend’s Sister Ran Up Beside Me… Then Grinned, “You Always Make Girls Chase You?”
Chapter 13
One winter, Ethan and Olivia returned to the city where they had first lived together.
They visited old restaurants.
Walked through familiar streets.
Found the apartment they had rented years ago.
The building looked smaller now.
Olivia laughed.
“We lived here?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“We were younger.”
“And poorer.”
“Definitely.”
They held hands.
The years had changed them.
But the connection remained.
At dinner, Olivia looked at him.
“Do you remember the first thing I asked you?”
Ethan smiled.
“Whether I always made girls chase me.”
She laughed.
“And?”
“You did.”
“I didn’t.”
“You absolutely did.”
She shook her head.
“Fine.”
He smiled.
“What?”
“I was curious.”
“About?”
“You.”
She became quiet.
“I liked that you didn’t try to impress me.”
He nodded.
“I liked that you weren’t impressed.”
She smiled.
That’s what had drawn them together.
Not status.
Not attraction alone.
Recognition.
They saw each other.
The relationship had started with a joke.
It survived because the joke became a conversation.
The conversation became friendship.
Friendship became love.
Love became family.
That was why the story mattered.
It wasn’t about the best friend’s sister.
It was about two people discovering that the person they were supposed to avoid became the person they couldn’t imagine losing.
One evening, Grace asked them to tell the story to her children.
They did.
The children laughed.
“Grandpa was afraid of Uncle Ryan.”
Ethan protested.
“Respectfully afraid.”
Olivia laughed.
“You were terrified.”
They retold the story.
The barbecue.
The ride.
The first kiss.
The wedding.
The children.
The years.
Then their youngest grandson asked:
“Who chased who?”
Everyone laughed.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
She looked at him.
Then she answered:
“Nobody.”
The boy frowned.
“Why?”
“Because love isn’t chasing.”
“It’s choosing.”
The family became quiet.
Ethan smiled.
That was the best answer.
