My Best Friend’s Sister Ran Up Beside Me… Then Grinned, “You Always Make Girls Chase You?”
Chapter 12
Ethan eventually retired from daily corporate leadership.
Olivia followed a year later.
They moved to a quieter house near a lake.
Ryan lived nearby.
Grace visited often.
Life slowed.
They gardened.
Cooked.
Travelled.
Read.
They finally had time.
One morning, Olivia ran beside Ethan on a walking trail.
She looked over.
“You know what?”
“What?”
“I’m still faster.”
He laughed.
“You’re still chasing me.”
She grinned.
“Always.”
They walked home together.
Their relationship had become simple.
That was the beauty.
No competition.
No proving.
No fear.
One afternoon, Grace announced she was getting married.
Ethan nearly cried.
Olivia cried first.
Ryan laughed.
“You two are becoming sentimental.”
“Wait until it’s your daughter.”
Ryan shook his head.
“Fair.”
The wedding planning began.
Grace asked her parents:
“How do I know someone is right?”
Ethan answered:
“You don’t know all at once.”
Olivia added:
“You learn over time.”
“You watch how they act when life is hard.”
“You watch whether they respect your dreams.”
“You watch whether they can apologize.”
“And whether you can laugh together.”
Grace smiled.
“Did you two know?”
Olivia laughed.
“No.”
Ethan said:
“We just kept choosing each other.”
That answer stayed with Grace.
Years earlier, Ethan had thought the hardest part would be convincing Ryan.
It wasn’t.
The hardest part was learning not to run from something real because it was inconvenient.
He almost lost Olivia because he was afraid.
She almost lost him because she wanted him to choose.
They both learned.
The family grew.
Grace married.
Children eventually came.
Ethan became a grandfather.
He loved it.
Olivia teased him.
“You spoil them.”
“That’s the job.”
Their home filled with laughter again.
The lake house became the place everyone gathered.
One evening, Ryan sat beside Ethan.
“You know what?”
“What?”
“I was wrong.”
“Again?”
Ryan laughed.
“I should’ve trusted you.”
Ethan nodded.
“Thanks.”
Ryan smiled.
“Still annoying, though.”
“Obviously.”
