The tunnel led to an old boathouse two hundred yards from the lake.
By the time they emerged, the house was surrounded.
Daniel, Adrian, and the twins escaped in an old truck.
They drove until dawn.
No one spoke.
Finally, Adrian said, “We need Claire.”
Daniel looked out the window.
“How do we find her?”
“The library.”
“What?”
“That’s where she left the photograph.”
They returned to the city under false names.
The librarian remembered Claire.
“She came every Thursday.”
“Did she leave anything?”
The librarian nodded.
She retrieved a sealed envelope.
Inside was a handwritten map.
No address.
Just coordinates.
Daniel recognized the location.
A former Mercer research facility.
Abandoned for fifteen years.
When they arrived, they found Claire.

“What change?”

Daniel looked at Nora and Elise.
“Why them?”

Daniel frowned.
“What family connection?”
Claire looked at him.
“Your father.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“The twins are your father’s biological grandchildren.”
