Millionaire Sees Twin Girls standing beside His Son’s Grave, Their Secret Leaves Him Speechless
Chapter 5
Storage Unit 317 had not been opened in eleven years.
The facility manager required three signatures and two forms of identification before allowing Daniel inside.
The lock was old.
The brass key fit perfectly.
When the door rolled upward, dust filled the narrow hallway.
Inside were boxes marked with Margaret’s handwriting.
Daniel expected photographs.
Furniture.
Old family possessions.
Instead, he found documents.
Dozens of them.
Marcus began photographing everything.
Daniel opened the first box.
Inside were copies of financial records dating back thirty years.
Some belonged to Mercer Holdings.
Others belonged to companies Daniel had never heard of.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Northstar Relief Foundation.
“What’s this?” Daniel asked.
Marcus searched on his tablet.
“Defunct charity. Closed fifteen years ago.”
“Who ran it?”
Marcus paused.
“Your father.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
His father had died when Daniel was thirty.
He remembered the man as demanding, distant, and obsessed with business.
But there was something else.
A second box contained medical records.
Not of Margaret.
Not of Ethan.
Of several children.
Daniel flipped through the files.
Names.
Birth dates.
Adoption documents.
Guardianship agreements.
All connected to Northstar.
“This can’t be real.”
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
“What?”
Daniel pointed.
“These children were transferred through private guardianship arrangements.”
“How many?”
“At least fourteen.”
The dates stretched over more than a decade.
Daniel kept reading.
Then he found a familiar name.
Claire Bell.
He stopped.
Her file contained one sentence written by hand:
Refused cooperation. Threatened exposure.
Daniel felt sick.
“What did my father do?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
The final box contained a cassette tape.
Old technology.
Daniel found a portable player nearby.
Margaret had apparently preserved it intentionally.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Margaret’s voice.
Daniel nearly dropped the player.
“I don’t know who will hear this.”
Her voice trembled.
“If you’re hearing this, then I failed to stop them.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Margaret continued.
“Daniel, if it’s you, I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid.”
A pause.
“The company was never only a company. Your father used it to move money through charities and private trusts. Some of those trusts were used to control vulnerable families.”
Daniel’s hands shook.
“I found evidence that Claire discovered the same thing. She tried to expose it. Your father threatened her. After he died, someone else continued the operation.”
The tape crackled.
“That person is still inside Mercer Holdings.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Margaret continued.
“Ethan knows something is wrong. He has started asking questions. Please protect him.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Daniel stared at the machine.
Ethan had not been killed because of an accident.
He had been investigating his own family.
Then Marcus found another envelope.
It contained a photograph of Ethan standing beside Claire.
On the back, Margaret had written:
They found the children.
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“The children,” he whispered.
He looked toward the twins.
Suddenly, their existence was no longer mysterious.
They were evidence.
Evidence someone had spent years trying to erase.
And Ethan had died protecting them.
