“I Thought Nobody Would Come,” She Said. The Cowboy Had Ridden All Night to Find Her

Chapter 11

The magistrate listened for three hours.

He examined the receipt.

The ledger.

The map.

The forged document.

Thomas’s confession.

Then he sent riders to Harrow’s estate.

By sunset, Edmund Harrow was under arrest.

The news spread quickly.

Villagers gathered outside the courthouse.

They had watched the Whitmore land slowly fall into debt.

Now they learned the truth.

The debt had been false.

The marriage contract had been a scheme.

And Harrow had intended to seize the river crossing.

Clara stood outside the courthouse.

Samuel joined her.

“It is over.”

She looked at him.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“I don’t believe it.”

“You should.”

She turned toward him.

“What happens now?”

Samuel shrugged.

“I go back to the cattle range.”

Clara’s smile disappeared.

“You’re leaving?”

“I don’t belong here.”

She stepped closer.

“You rode all night to find me.”

“I would do it again.”

“Then why leave?”

Samuel looked at her.

“Because now you’re free.”

“I was never asking you to save me.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you?”

He was silent.

Clara touched his hand.

“Samuel.”

He looked at her.

“I don’t want to go back to pretending.”

Neither moved.

Then Clara whispered:

“I thought nobody would come.”

Samuel smiled.

“I came.”

“I know.”

She took his hand.

“And now I don’t want you to leave.”

For a long moment, the noise of the village seemed to disappear.

Samuel leaned toward her.

Then stopped.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

He kissed her.

It was not a grand kiss.

There were no witnesses worth impressing.

No music.

No flowers.

Only two people standing beneath an old oak tree, finally admitting what they had spent years refusing to say.
