She gave a speech.
She told the crowd:
“I was nervous that night.”

“What happened was that children benefited.”
“And two people met.”
She looked at Alexander.
“One of them happened to bid five thousand dollars.”
The crowd laughed.
“But he did something more important afterward.”
“He respected me.”
“He changed reporting structures.”
“He protected my career.”
“He never treated me like something he purchased.”
“He let me choose.”
Alexander looked emotional.
Sophie continued:
“That is why our story lasted.”
“Not because of a bid.”
“Because of what happened after it.”
The audience applauded.
Alexander joined her on stage.
He took her hand.
“Best five thousand dollars ever.”
The crowd laughed again.
Sophie smiled.
