He Connected His Cabin To His Barn With A Tunnel – Then Winter Came
Chapter 6
The storm lasted five days.
By the third day, the entire valley was isolated.
Roads disappeared beneath snow.
Power lines collapsed.
Cell towers failed.
The outside world had no idea what was happening inside the mountain.
Caleb, Tom, and Sarah remained trapped inside the barn.
The people hunting them controlled the underground tunnels.
But they hadn’t entered the barn.
Not yet.
Caleb spent hours studying the facility’s maps.
There had to be another way out.
Eventually, he found something.
A tunnel leading north.
It wasn’t connected to the main network.
It had been sealed decades ago.
The entrance was located beneath the barn.
Caleb showed Tom.
“If we open this, we might be able to reach the old logging road.”
Tom shook his head.
“That road is buried.”
“Maybe.”
“And if the tunnel collapses?”
“Then we’re dead.”
Sarah looked at both men.
“What’s the alternative?”
Caleb didn’t answer.
That evening, they heard drilling beneath them.
Someone was trying to break into the barn.
Caleb knew they couldn’t wait.
They opened the sealed tunnel.
The air inside was freezing.
They moved slowly.
After several hundred yards, they reached a concrete barrier.
Caleb used explosives from his father’s old mining equipment.
The blast shook the mountain.
Snow fell from the ceiling.
But the barrier cracked.
Behind it was a larger tunnel.
And beyond that…
A train track.
Tom stared.
“There was a railway here?”
Caleb shook his head.
“No.”
The tracks were modern.
They looked less than ten years old.
A maintenance train sat in the darkness.
Someone had been using the mountain recently.
Caleb climbed aboard.
The controls were active.
He turned them on.
The train moved.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
They traveled for nearly twenty minutes.
Eventually, the tunnel opened into an enormous underground chamber.
There were vehicles.
Crates.
Fuel tanks.
Computer equipment.
And hundreds of barrels.
Sarah looked at the labels.
“Water treatment chemicals.”
Caleb felt sick.
This was the operation.
They weren’t just controlling the water.
They were preparing to contaminate it.
A computer terminal displayed a schedule.
PHASE ONE — WINTER STORM
PHASE TWO — WATER CONTAMINATION
PHASE THREE — EMERGENCY LAND ACQUISITION
Caleb understood.
The storm wasn’t accidental.
It had been chosen because the roads would be closed.
The contamination would be blamed on damaged infrastructure.
Then the organization would purchase the land cheaply.
The entire valley would be affected.
Tom pointed toward a list.
“Look.”
Several names were marked.
Government officials.
Landowners.
Companies.
Banks.
The operation was massive.
Sarah found one final document.
A photograph.
Her husband was standing beside several investigators.
One person had been blacked out.
But Sarah recognized him.
“That’s Sheriff Reeves.”
Caleb stared.
The sheriff wasn’t simply protecting the operation.
He was running it.
Then the underground speakers activated.
A voice filled the chamber.
“You finally found the heart of Winterfall.”
Caleb turned.
A large screen came alive.
The sheriff appeared.
“You have no idea how long we’ve waited for this.”
Caleb stepped toward the camera.
“You killed my father.”
The sheriff smiled.
“Your father chose his fate.”
“He tried to stop you.”
“He tried to expose us.”
Sarah shouted:
“You killed my husband!”
The sheriff’s expression hardened.
“He knew too much.”
Caleb looked at the chemical barrels.
“What happens next?”
The sheriff smiled.
“The storm will last another two days.”
“And then?”
“Then the valley wakes up without clean water.”
Caleb looked at the controls.
“Not if we stop you.”
The sheriff laughed.
“You’re trapped underground.”
Caleb glanced at the train.
“No.”
He pointed toward the tracks.
“We’re exactly where we need to be.”
