He Connected His Cabin To His Barn With A Tunnel – Then Winter Came

Chapter 5

Sarah’s revelation changed everything.

Caleb locked every entrance to the property.

Tom checked the tunnel doors.

Sarah stayed near the generator room.

Nobody knew how many people were moving through the mountain.

The storm made outside communication nearly impossible.

But the underground network gave them one advantage.

They could move without being seen.

Caleb returned to the control room.

He examined the list Sarah had brought.

The names dated back decades.

Some belonged to miners.

Some to government employees.

Some to journalists.

Others were ordinary residents.

All had one thing in common.

They had discovered Winterfall.

Caleb’s father had known.

And he had apparently tried to stop it.

Sarah’s husband had continued that investigation.

That was why he died.

Caleb opened his father’s journal again.

The missing pages bothered him.

He searched the room.

Behind the cabinet, he found a loose floor tile.

Under it was a metal box.

Inside were the missing pages.

Caleb unfolded the first.

If anyone finds this, the project was never abandoned.

The next page:

Winterfall was converted into a private facility in 1994.

Another:

The people running it are not government officials anymore.

Caleb continued.

They use the old tunnels to move people, equipment, and evidence without anyone seeing.

Tom looked at him.

“Evidence of what?”

Caleb reached the final page.

His father’s handwriting was shaking.

They discovered a way to manipulate the mountain’s underground water system.

Caleb looked up.

Sarah stared.

“What does that mean?”

Caleb studied the maps.

The tunnels weren’t simply tunnels.

Many of them followed underground water channels.

The organization had built structures around natural reservoirs.

Whoever controlled those channels could potentially control the water supply for the entire valley.

Tom understood.

“They can shut off the water.”

“Or contaminate it,” Caleb said.

Sarah’s face went pale.

“That’s why my husband was investigating.”

Caleb nodded.

Then the lights flickered.

A low mechanical sound came from deeper in the facility.

Something had activated.

They looked at the monitors.

One screen came alive.

A map appeared.

Several red lights were moving through the tunnels.

Tom whispered:

“They’re coming.”

“How many?”

Caleb counted.

At least eight.

Sarah looked terrified.

“Can they reach us?”

Caleb studied the map.

“Yes.”

“Then what do we do?”

Caleb pointed toward the tunnel leading to the barn.

“We move.”

They gathered supplies.

Caleb carried the radio.

Tom took the medical kit.

Sarah grabbed her backpack.

They entered the tunnel.

Halfway to the barn, they heard footsteps behind them.

Caleb turned off the lights.

Everyone crouched.

A beam of light appeared in the distance.

Someone was coming.

A man whispered:

“Search every chamber.”

Another voice:

“They know about the control room.”

Caleb recognized the second voice.

Sheriff Daniel Reeves.

Impossible.

He had been dead for fifteen years.

Caleb realized the photograph had been wrong.

The man in the picture wasn’t Reeves.

It was his son.

The current sheriff.

Caleb’s father had been working with the sheriff’s family.

And now that family was hunting them.

Caleb motioned for everyone to move.

They crawled through a narrow maintenance passage.

It emerged behind a storage wall in the barn.

They locked the door.

Then they heard the tunnel door open.

Someone had followed them.

Caleb looked at Tom.

“Can they get into the barn?”

Tom shook his head.

“Not unless they find this entrance.”

Caleb smiled.

“Then let’s make sure they don’t.”

He activated the emergency lockdown.

Steel shutters dropped over the barn windows.

The generator switched to maximum output.

The barn became a fortress.

Outside, the storm screamed.

Inside, footsteps echoed beneath the floor.

Then someone pounded on the hidden door.

A voice called:

“Caleb Morgan!”

Caleb didn’t answer.

“We know you’re in there.”

Silence.

Then:

“Your father made the same mistake.”

Caleb’s eyes narrowed.

“What mistake?”

The voice answered:

“Thinking the mountain belonged to him.”
