Everyone Ignored the Quiet Cook—Until a Mountain Man Asked About Her Cornbread
Chapter 8
They returned to the valley by another path.
Elias knew the mountains.
He led Clara through forests and narrow trails until they reached a small farm owned by an old friend.
There they stayed overnight.
The next morning, Elias told Clara something she had not expected.
“I cannot take you to the magistrate yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Mercer owns the magistrate’s debt.”
Clara stared.
“What?”
“He bought it two years ago.”
“Then who can help us?”
“A traveling judge is expected next month.”
“That is too long.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the documents.
“What if Mercer finds us?”
“He will.”
“Then we need another plan.”
Clara suddenly remembered the recipe box.
She opened it.
Her mother’s recipes were written on both sides.
She turned one page.
There was a small symbol in the margin.
A cross.
Another page.
Another cross.
She laid the pages together.
The marks formed a pattern.
Elias leaned over.
“These are locations.”
“What?”
“Your mother hid messages in the recipes.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
They followed the symbols.
One led to the old mill.
Another to the church.
Another to the cemetery.
At the cemetery, beneath a stone bearing Clara’s mother’s name, they found another packet.
Inside was a letter.
Clara, if you are reading this, then Elias has kept his promise. Trust him.
Clara could not speak.
Elias looked away.
“She knew.”
“She trusted you.”
“I promised.”
Clara folded the letter.
“You kept your promise.”
Elias nodded.
“Yes.”
She took his hand.
“Thank you.”
He squeezed her fingers gently.
Neither released the other’s hand for a long time.
