CEO Fired the Night Janitor in Front of Her Daughter—Unaware He Owned the Bridge Her Company Needed
Chapter 7
Their relationship began quietly.
There were no public announcements.
No dramatic declarations.
Daniel took Victoria to small restaurants she would never have visited alone.
Victoria introduced Daniel to parts of the city he had ignored for years.
Lily noticed immediately.
One weekend, she caught them holding hands in the kitchen.
She raised an eyebrow.
“So…”
Daniel froze.
Victoria smiled.
“So?”
Lily pointed between them.
“Are we pretending nothing is happening?”
Daniel laughed nervously.
“You’re eighteen.”
“I have eyes.”
Victoria covered her smile.
Lily looked at her father.
“Are you happy?”
Daniel became serious.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Then I’m happy.”
That was all.
No approval was needed after that.
The professional consequences were harder.
Daniel became CEO of Sterling Development after the board confirmed the transition.
He insisted on an independent ethics committee.
He removed several executives connected to questionable contracts.
Richard fought every decision.
“This company needs strength,” Richard said.
“It needs trust,” Daniel answered.
Richard mocked him.
“You were a janitor six months ago.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And before that, I built half the infrastructure you depend on.”
Victoria watched silently.
She knew Daniel had earned the authority.
But Richard wasn’t finished.
He began digging through Daniel’s past.
He discovered the holding company.
He discovered the bridge.
And he discovered something else.
Documents connected Richard’s old business partners to the collapse of Carter Construction.
Richard didn’t know Daniel had already suspected the truth.
What he didn’t know was that Victoria had begun investigating too.
She found irregular payments.
Hidden consulting fees.
Property transfers.
And one name appearing again and again.
Charles Whitmore.
A former Sterling executive who had helped finance the group that destroyed Daniel’s company.
Victoria confronted Richard.
“You sabotaged him.”
Richard slammed his hand against the desk.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I have the documents.”
“They’ll never survive court.”
“Maybe not.”
She held up another file.
“But the board will see them.”
Richard stared at her.
“You’re choosing him over your family.”
Victoria’s voice was calm.
“No. I’m choosing the truth over the version of my family you invented.”
For years, Victoria had feared that moment.
Now that it had arrived, she felt strangely free.
That night she told Daniel everything.
He listened.
Then he said something she hadn’t expected.
“I don’t want revenge.”
“What do you want?”
“To make sure they never do it to anyone else.”
Victoria took his hand.
“That is why I love you.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I love you too.”
And for the first time, neither of them was afraid to say it.
