A Single Mom Planted 10,000 Trees on Dead Land—Then a Billionaire Offered $15 Million

Chapter 4

Emily expected a number.

She expected five hundred thousand dollars.

Maybe a million.

She didn’t expect fifteen million.

Michael Sterling said it casually.

“Fifteen million dollars.”

Emily stared at him.

For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.

Michael continued.

“The offer includes the land, the restoration project, and all associated rights.”

Emily finally found her voice.

“No.”

Michael blinked.

“You didn’t even think about it.”

“I did.”

“You’ve been offered fifteen million dollars for property you bought for eighteen thousand.”

“I know.”

“That could change your daughter’s life.”

Emily’s expression hardened.

“That’s exactly why I’m not selling.”

Michael looked surprised.

“Explain.”

“Because if I sell this, Lily learns that everything has a price.”

He glanced toward the trees.

“Everything does.”

“Not this.”

Michael smiled slightly.

“You believe that.”

“I know it.”

He didn’t argue.

Instead, he asked:

“What if I told you I don’t want to destroy it?”

Emily looked at him.

“What do you want?”

“A conservation campus.”

She remained silent.

Michael explained that he wanted to create a privately funded environmental research center.

Scientists could study restoration.

Schools could visit.

The land could remain protected.

Emily shook her head.

“Why?”

“Because I watched my own company spend billions fixing problems we could have prevented for millions.”

He paused.

“I’m tired of building things that consume.”

Emily studied him.

“You expect me to believe a billionaire suddenly cares about trees?”

Michael laughed.

“No.”

“Good.”

“I expect you to believe that billionaires can have regrets.”

That answer surprised her.

He handed her a folder.

Inside were maps.

Plans.

Financial projections.

Environmental studies.

And one photograph.

Aerial imagery of the region.

Emily looked at it.

Then noticed something.

A red line ran along the northern edge of her property.

“What is this?”

“Proposed highway expansion.”

Her stomach tightened.

“That’s not happening.”

Michael nodded.

“It is.”

“When?”

“Construction could begin within three years.”

Emily stared at the map.

The highway would cut through the northern section of the land.

Thousands of trees would be lost.

Water flow would change.

Wildlife corridors would disappear.

“Who approved this?”

“The state hasn’t finalized it.”

“Then why are you telling me?”

“Because my company owns the land on the other side.”

Emily looked up.

Michael continued.

“I could make the highway project disappear.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“In exchange for what?”

“Nothing.”

She didn’t believe him.

“Nobody gives away something worth fifteen million.”

Michael looked at her.

“You’re right.”

He closed the folder.

“So here’s the real offer.”
