Ethan followed Victoria into the executive elevator.
He had never imagined seeing the inside of the top floor of Halston Technologies.
Everything was quiet.
Too quiet.
The walls were made of glass.
The city stretched beneath them.
Victoria walked into her office.
Ethan remained near the door.
“You can sit.”
He sat.
She placed a folder on the desk.
It contained his résumé.
“You have excellent operational experience.”
“Thank you.”
“You also have a six-month gap.”
“Four months.”
She looked at him.
“You’ve been unemployed for four months.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“My mother became ill.”
Victoria paused.
Ethan continued.
“I left my previous job to take care of her.”
“Is she better?”
“She passed away two months ago.”
Victoria’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Victoria looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell HR?”
“Because I didn’t want sympathy.”
She nodded slowly.
“That answer tells me more about you than your résumé.”
Ethan smiled faintly.
Victoria leaned back.
“There’s another problem.”
“What?”
“You saved me last night.”
“Yes.”
“And now you’re applying to work here.”
“I realize how strange that looks.”
“It looks very strange.”
“I didn’t plan it.”
“I believe you.”
She looked toward the window.
“Someone tried to kill me.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Do you know who?”
“No.”
“Then you should be careful.”
Victoria gave him a curious look.
“You sound like my security chief.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
She smiled.
Then her smile disappeared.
“I want you to take the job.”
Ethan blinked.
“Just like that?”
“Operations assistant. Starting Monday.”
“Don’t you need references?”
“I checked them.”
“Background check?”
“Already underway.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You’ve known me for less than twelve hours.”
“I watched you risk your life for someone you didn’t know.”
“That doesn’t prove I’m good at operations.”
Victoria smiled.
“No. Your résumé does.”
Ethan laughed.
“Fair enough.”
Victoria stood.
“One condition.”
“What?”
“You don’t work directly for me.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone in this building will assume I hired you because you saved me.”
“That might be true.”
“It isn’t.”
She looked him in the eye.
“You earned the job.”
Ethan stood.
“Thank you.”
As he reached the door, Victoria called him back.
“Ethan.”
He turned.
“If you ever see anything unusual around the building, tell security.”
He nodded.
“I will.”
He left.
Victoria remained alone.
She looked at the security monitor on her desk.
Then at a photograph of her father.
Her father’s company had become Halston Technologies after his death.
And for months, Victoria had suspected someone inside the company was stealing money.
Last night had confirmed it.
The attack wasn’t random.
Someone wanted her dead.
And now the stranger who had saved her had walked directly into the company where the betrayal was happening.
Victoria didn’t know it yet.
But Ethan’s arrival would uncover something no security investigation had been able to find.
